I know some will say about this post, stop beating a dead horse or he isn't here anymore so who cares. Well, when it comes to Marner, he basically blamed Toronto(Team, fans, etc) for his lack of playoff success. He played, and is still trying to play the victim.
Now that the Cup has been handed to the team that ironically Marner blocked a trade to last season, which I guess could be some poetic justice, I took a little deeper dive into his playoff performance. Most probably know he finished the playoffs leading the NHL in points with 29(10/19) and was a +11. Looks like a great performance, but was he clutch?

He was often criticized for his lack of production in clutch games (5-7). How did Marner do this year in this category.

Against Utah
Game 5 1 assist, 2 sog.
Game 6 Marner comes alive in that series and helps clinch the series with a 2 goal 1 assist, 7 sog performance. Great game.
Anaheim
game 5 o points 1 sog
Game 6 1 goal 1 assist 1 sog Another good performance.
Colorado.
There was no game 5 as Vegas swept the series, but in game 4, the clinching game, Marner went pointless with 2 sog.
The finals against Carolina
Game 5 Pointless 1 sog
Game 6 Pointless 3 sog
Notable that in game 4 when Vegas had a chance to go ahead 3 games to 1. Marner had 1 assist and 0 shots on goal. He was also a -5 in the final 3 games combined.
Total 6 games of 5-7 with 3 goals and 3 assists. A point per game seems pretty good, but 3 games he was held pointless. If we add the clinching game against Colorado he had 6 points in 7 games, but held pointless in 4 of the 7.
Another interesting fact is how well Marner did when Vegas basically blew out the opponent. There were 3 games where Vegas won by 4 goals. Marner had 6 goals and 3 assists with 13 sog combined. Those 3 games accounted for almost 1/3 of his playoff points where he averaged 3 points per game. In thise 3 games were also his only game winning goals. 3 great games by him and 2 were series clinching games. He was also held pointless with only 13 total shots on goal in 7 of the 22 games. Almost 1/3 of his games he was held pointless. That means his 29 points were all in the other 15 games obviously. Almost 2 points per game, which are great totals. Yet, no game winning goals in tight games.

For me, Marner had a good playoffs, and obviously he was not the reason they didn't win the cup, just like in Toronto. But hard to conclude that he was clutch when he went pointless in 4 of the 7 games that were in the clutch category. In Toronto, Marner went a point per game or better in 4 of 9 series. One other he had 4 points in 5 games. He tallied 52 points in 60 playoff games in Toronto and when you consider that he wasn't in his prime for most of it, those are very good numbers. But it was never his total points he was really being criticized for. It was lack of production in the clutch games. He had 3 good clutch games this time, but held pointless in 4. Personally, I wouldn't call that a clutch player, but I am sure there will be defenders. Was he better this time? Yes. Should he now be considered a great playoff performer who shows up when it really matters? No.

All I will say is. He had a great playoff run no matter how you slice and dice it. They lost to the most balanced lineup in the NHL. You need to give it a rest. It’s consuming you to the point of an obsession. If a hockey player consumes you to this point … Man I hope you never go through a tough relationship of marriage breakup.

Let’s focus on the season ahead and what we have and need to get not on a player we don’t have. Hope that by unloading your week goes well. Cheers.

I do find it slightly funny that he blocked that trade to Carolina who ultimately best his new team to win the cup. But at the time, he was thinking if he could win a cup in Toronto before heading out of town, he'd be a legend forever. Or maybe he doesn't leave at all.
But just thinking if that trade did happen, he'd be on the Canes and maybe a Cup champ, Leafs would have Rantanen and a more balanced offense, (albeit less cap flexibility) and Dallas would still have Stankoven and not be in their cap issue troubles they are currently in.

Just never know how it's going to work out... that's why you need to play the games.

I do wonder though if the Leafs players watched that game last night and saw a team win the cup that really played for eachother, was $12M under the cap and just stuck with it year after year even when they got beat in previous years. Should be some good lessons for especially the Leafs leadership group to stop crying about stuff and just get to work. And boy oh boy, I wish we had a coach like Rod!

GMrick. It was interesting the way it played out. Good point on Dallas as well.

Suffering it's not consuming me by any means. What a wild thing to suggest. You see what I wrote as some kind of unloading?lol This is a prop and debate forum after all. It interests me to see how it played out considering how he left and the things he said. Do I think it karma that he lost in the finals and was invisible basically in games 5 and 6. Yes. He played the victim and then he didn't step up in the end. He insinuates he isn't an issue, but it's happened on two teams now, so can't be just everyone else.

When I do post something about Marner, which is actually not really often at all, you come on defending him right away and then suggest I am either weak minded or have mental issues or something. Seriously? What are you, like 15? You defend him constantly no matter what, even though, as you say he is gone so give it a rest. How is what you do not an obsession with defending the guy? You do it every time.

Plus, you literally know nothing about me, my life etc. Maybe take a good look at yourself before predicting my personal life considering you obviously feel the need to take shots at me on almost every opinion post I make.

When I do try and debate with you, you always go to insults. But I'm the one who has the issues and trouble letting go? That makes sense to you, I guess. Plus I wasn't the one who was going to quit the site over likes on their posts, but your worried about ME not being able to handle a breakup. Ok, thanks for the concern.
In my post on Marner, I put out facts and followed with my opinion based on those facts. I actually praised him as well (which you gloss over).

You just don't like facts or opinions that don't highlight Marner, so you take your little cheap shots. Ironically, what your doing, is known as rhetorical weakness. Anyhow, despite what you may think, your cheap shots don't send me into some kind of spiral. If you want the truth, generally I just kind of sigh a bit, as I expect it from you and it's just another eye roll moment. That doesn't mean I won't respond to your post. I'd prefer we just debate hockey, but you gotta do you, so whatever.

We also let his cap hit go, which was a huge selling point from the Leafs perspective, unfortunately. Tre spent it on crap instead of what we needed. Maybe it wasn’t available. I loved Marner, but I’m anxious to see where we spend what we gained from him walking.

Watched Marner doing his dipsy doodling and not going in corners and trademark perimeter play in games 5 and 6.
Yeah don’t miss him at all.
Like someone said earlier, the incompetent tredeadthing replaced him with 3 stooges in Roy, Joshua and Maccelli, who contributed nothing, which only emphasized the absence of Marner.

My last comment in regards to this matter. Will stick strictly to comments about trades in any posts with you. I find it very odd that you acccuse Randy Sears or Insulting you. Which in that particular post did not see a insult. Not because I mention you go on the Mitch Marner Rants and you never seem to ever just move on from the situation. I compare it to someone going through relationship breakups I am insulting you? It is a little odd you make the huge long posts pointing out his faults.

You said I don't know anything about you. Well truthfully, what do you know personally about Marner to point out so many character flaws that you have pointed out.? I know you will comment just to get the last word in as Randy Sears pointed out earlier. It will be the last word as I am tired of wasting words with you. Probably a mutual feeling. Have a good night.

No one cares about Marner. Move on. He didn’t get his ring and never will.
