Maybe try a little retool for fun?

To Leafs: E. Karlsson, Rust, 2nd 2027, 3rd 2026

To Pens: Nylander, Reilly

FA pickups:
Malkin - 1 X 4M
McMann 4 X 5M
Greer 2 X 2M
Stanley 3 X 2.2M
Coyle 2 X 6M

Knies Matthews Malkin
Cowan JT Rust
McMann Coyle Robertson
Greer Groulx Domi

OEL Karlsson
McCabe Tanev
Carlo Danford
Stanley

If it doesn’t work out trade them for draft picks/ prospects and start the rebuild.

Laughable

Leafs have zero interest in this.

Clarke did say for fun guys. I will say though, Karlsson would certainly change how quick the puck would move from the D/Zone to the offensive transition. If we kept Matthew’s Nylander and Knies two free agents I would target, that would change things up on the forwards. Would be Coyle, who would be #2 center with Nylander, and A. J Greer, who would be with J. T on the third line to take the corner work off J.

T to preserve his body a bit longer. Now your #2 and #3 line depending on the wingers (I would go Cowan on #2 and Groulx on #3) start to resemble a more even group similar to Carolina. #1 winger with Knie and Matthews. If Maccelli is kept use him or do a trial by fire and put Holinka on the wing. He is a sniper but also a very good two way player. Nothing to lose by trying it.

The only signing I liked was Stanley, but he's looking to be a 4x4 contract value which I would do in a heart beat.

Well my thought process behind this is, Nylander is the best player trade but Reilly doesn’t carry much value and carries a 7.5M cap hit for the next 4 seasons after this one. Karlsson (like Suffering said) will improve our breakout and puck movement in our own end plus will be much better than Reilly on the PP. Yes, it’s 10M but only for one season after this and maybe resign him for an extra year at a team friendly rate.

Rust is a guy that fits the way this team wants to play and by picking these two might intrigue Malkin to sign for at least one more year with the Leafs. Give it a try for a season or two and if it doesn’t work out we trade Rust, Matthews, etc. for draft picks and start the rebuild. Just throwing out another option is all.

My view is while Nylander might be explosive and get a big play. Karlsson is capable of controlling the tempo of the whole shift every shift when he is on the ice. Nothing wrong with Options, Clarky.

Even if those options only turn into partial plans. They are still ways of thinking outside the box, and God knows with this team we need to not think outside the box but live outside of the box.
