Chara is a slug. He doesn’t fit the Leafs style of play in any way. Boston is going to re-sign Chara. Boston’s entire style of play is based around their captain. Chara is never coming to Leafs. Not sure why you keep posting inane proposals suggesting he is.

There is a huge difference between drafting someone and bringing them up in your system, learning your style of play, than trying to sign a 41 year old UFA that is captain and centrepiece of another team and expecting him to change his style of play to suit yours.

We all agree Leafs need a big stay at home defensive defenseman. We are overloaded with smallish, speedy defensemen who think they are forwards, and can’t clear the net.

Räsänen is a good player that may make the team one day as a third line pairing defenseman, but Leafs are not going to change their entire style of play based on him as Boston has done with Chara. Chara has a good thing going in Boston that just isn’t reproducible on any other team. I fully expect he will retire a Bruin.

Matthews - Mackin clearly knew who we drafted. It was a ritorical question.

He’s also entirely correct that we need a player like Chara. Chara is too old and will be over paid so I don’t think he fits our mold but, if he was 5 years younger he would be perfect.

Rasanen is similar in size to chara but not in how he plays. Chara is the perfect mold for a stay at home dman who can blast it from the point. Rasanen is more offensively minded. But I think that’s a good thing as the slow stay at home dmen don’t work anymore. The game is so much faster. If Rasanen develops well, which he very well could, he’ll be a great NHL dman.
