You undervalued every player. You think Matthews is getting 7 million?

Ryan Elllis for 4.5?
How you're going to sign Gardiner for 4.5 years is beyond me. I didn't know you could do half years.

You should stop posting.

How do you sign Gardiner for 4.5 years? Lol. His play has gotten better. He will be looking for more money than he currently makes.

Ellis is going to want both more term and money.

Thornton is question mark. I have a hard time believing he will leave the Sharks just to go back after a year to retire.

Matthews is definitely going to get a lot more term and money. We’re looking at 8 years and north of $10 M for him.

You didn’t say how much you were giving Nylander.

Why are you signing Johnsson to a one year deal only to re-sign him the next year for two years? Why not just sign him for three years outright?

Leafs are better off exposing Carrick than Zaitsev.

All these short term deals for young players are not going to fly. Players want stability.

Just to drive the point home a little more, Matthews is a franchise player. If Leafs don’t make him a better offer than 4 years, $7M then 31 other teams will. And Leafs will be forced to match. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone offers 8 years at $13M, just so Leafs have to match and blow their budget. It happens all the time.

First, you posted complete tripe about JVR and now you are claiming that other teams will offer Matthews more so that the Leafs have to match and it blows their budget, and that it happens all the time? You haven't the slightest clue what you are talking about and no, it does not happen all the time Do you actually know anything about hockey, beyond your vast experience with video games?

Trade Gardiner, keep Brown. Gardiner will ask for 6 million plus a season so let him walk. Let Bozak and JVR both walk along with Komarov. I want to see both Grundstrom and Johnsson play a full season.

DBF

July 2012, Flyers offer Weber 14 years, $110M
July 2007, Edmonton poaches Penner from Anaheim by offering 5 years, $21.5M which Anaheim failed to match
Aug 1997, Flyers offer Gratton 5 years, $16.5M
July 1991, Blues steal Scott Stevens from Washington by making him the highest paid defenseman in the league with offer of 4 years, $5.1M

These are just four examples dating back over 25 years of some of the crazy offers made to free agents in order to drive up the market value on these players and break the budget of competing teams.

Took me exactly two minutes to look that up.

LeafsGM - I wouldn’t call 4 times in the last 27 years ‘all the time’. You’re forgetting one major detail as well. Any team that try’s to screw the leafs risk being stuck with that contract and losing 4 first round picks. Don’t be stupid though, Matthews will be signed before any other team had a chance to offer sheet.

Leafs future not only does JVR and Bozak refuse that but your bringing back the same time no thanks

I only provided 4 examples because space and time do not allow more. These examples go back over 25 years and involve some amazing players to prove a point. It is not unusual for another team to make outlandish offers RFA’s. It is standard practice.

As for being “stuck” with Matthews and having to forfeit the four first round picks. I’m sure any team in the league would be willing to have that happen. You could draft four players and combined they wouldn’t equal Matthews ability.

Of course you are right that Matthews will be signed first before any one else has the opportunity to make in an offer. But it’s going to be for a lot more than 4 years, $7M, which was the whole point to begin with that started this conversation.

Matthews is definitely a 10 million dollar player. I don’t think he’ll get that much though. I believe that the players are buying in and will sign cap friendly deals. But even if it went to arbitration Matthews would likely get max term at 8.5-9. Stamkos and Malkin are comparables. I’m not Matthews would be taken before either of them yet. If Matthews agent is smart they wouldn’t talk about a contract until next summer after another year of Matthews improving. I’m hoping he’s not that smart.
