My thoughts are the Leafs should trade JVR as he will bring a solid return. Keep Bozak and Komarov as the return is not worth moving them.

Insert Kapanen for JVR and play Leivo on the 4th line. Don't think the Leafs are a significant downgrade overall, JVR is on the 3rd line right now.

To CAR: F - JVR

To TOR: D - J. Bean + 2018 1st round pick

Adds another quality prospect to the pool and a pick. The Leafs can then use both as trade bait or trade others in the off-season.

That’s a pretty good trade, and I like your assessment of the Leafs UFA situation. The only problem I see is that Carolina is a bubble team and my not make the playoffs this year. I have a hard time believing they would trade away a first round pick and good defensive prospect for a rental player. If Carolina doesn’t make the playoffs and JVR walks, they just gave away a high end prospect and a first round pick. So a deal for JVR to sign with Carolina would have to be in place first.

This is the type of return I would like to see for JVR, but we probably won’t get it from a bubble team. We will only get a trade like this coming from a team heading into playoffs looking to shore up scoring.

If there was another team jvr would sign with it probably would be Carolina. His brother plays for the canes.

HIS brother’s contract expires end of this year too, so Carolina would have to re-sign both of them.

Fair enough, guess it's on whether they think they should go for it or not. They can lottery protect the pick so if they miss the playoffs it's a 2019 1st.

As for the sign and trade, tough to complete that, but give them 48 hrs to come up with something.

While Bean is a lefty; he is a quality prospect. The Canes are strong on LHD and can afford to move Bean.

Obtaining Bean could allow the Leafs to trade Gardiner for good return in the summer, and push Dermott into the 2nd pair next year. He might just be able to handle it; and if not they have plenty of options. Future cap conditions will force the Leafs to move Gardiner.

The 1st being lottery protected will be immaterial, as the playoff bound, Canes are on a steady 6-3-1 upswing while the Isles, Jackets, Rangers, and Devils are all sub 500 in their last 10. (Although the Jackets could go on a run, it doesn't appear the Devils will remain in the hunt, dropping fast; keeping the Canes in a wildcard spot) . But you never know.

The Canes don't lose a roster player in this deal, are a playoff bound team, and are loaded with top notch prospects, so losing one 1st and a LHD of which they are set, won't hurt.

The Leafs can't afford to let JVR walk for nothing, let alone Leo and Bozak; it's counterproductive to the rebuild. JVR can be replaced by others or with a trade. It's not like he's dominating the league, or the Leafs for that matter.

Helping Carolina in the competitive Metropolitan doesn't hurt the Leafs at all, given the playoff structure and current situation.

A good deal for both teams, as the Canes are one of only a few teams that aren't a disaster, that will have the cap space to sign JVR. His brother will get re-signed as he is cheap and effective as a 3rd pair D. I hear Raleigh is nice this time of year.
