Terrible deal! If the Leafs are trading that type of package to Caroline, Faulk is coming back ++ more pieices. JVR if you trade him straight up he'll net a 1st pick, so essentially you are trading 2 1st's and a top prospect picked in the 1st, plus a 3rd on top of that! Give you head a shake!

Toronto Bud- Kapanen and a first won't get you Faulk alone. Forget about JVR because they don't want need or can afford him.

They do need scoring look at their GF, the Canes can easily afford JVR if they are trading Faulk, his salary out of pocket for the Canes is $6 mill/ yr for the last two years and already he is costing them $5.75 mill/ yr this season with the bonus he earned in his first two seasons, it's just the way his contract is set up ($5.5+$.25 mill from year 1 and 2)they don't care about the cap hit which is less at $4.83 for Faulk it was set up this way just because it's easier to trade him to teams who are close to the cap which the Canes are not. They have young D man who are ready to step in and are a lot cheaper and the salary for JVR which will be around $5.5 to $5.75 mill/ yr is still less than what Faulk is costing them now and as I said they don't need him or his contract, but they end up with a guy that will score 30+ goals for them up front they need and the whole transaction is a wash, their salary does not even go up and they acquire a 30+ goal scorer in his prime, and he'll sign with the Canes his brother is on the team and they are very close he may even give them a Broad. Discount.

Justin Faulk isn't much better offensively than Gardiner and he's worse defensively (cough) . Averages about -20 every year. He will be too expensive when the kids arrive next year. Will only get traded again.

We need a defender not an offender. Hainsey is doing quite well. We are fine. Defencemen need to be developed from within the organization over time. Fluery (7th OA) was drafted in 2014 and only got his shot this year.

But if you need a quick fix this summer for a RHD:

Free Agent Andre Sustr (TAM) . - 26 year old, 4 year pro, RHD, 6'7", 220, cheap, quality, stay at home dman. Skates well for a tree trunk. Will end up on the 3rd pair eventually, but can play all 3 seeding's.

Free Agent John Carlson (WAS) - But will be expensive (6-7M) - good in all facets of the game.

Erik Gudbranson
Calvin De Haan

And the list goes on.

No need to sell the farm for one Dman and an average center.
