Joffrey Lupul to Dallas Stars for one of their backup goalies because they have Bishop now. and maybe a Dallas Stars draft pick in 2018.

Lupus can't be bought out as he is "injured" and would have to clear first, I personally can't see them bothering with a buyout.

You're right I forgot about that. I guess the leafs have to weigh the value of an overpaid backup to dead cap space that can be used towards LTIR.

Important to remember lupul's actually salary is much less than his cap hit. Salary: 3.75 Cap hit: 5.25.
Could be a quick sell to a team looking to get to the floor such as Arizona/ vegas.

I also like the swap for niemi. Leafs will need a backup and niemi could be that guy. Stars can LTIR lupul and avoid a buyout.

It's not that bad a deal.

The Stars catch the money break, the cap space is even enough. The Leafs unload Lupul's 5.25M for 4.5 M of declining back up goalie.

But Niemi's numbers last year were terrible. So no.

Now taking LetOneIn might be a better option. He declining as well but he's much more consistent. He costs a little more for one year at 5.9M but the difference is trivial to the Leafs this coming year.

If Vegas takes him, we would just have to cry about it, and hire Mac again.

Dallas would get to use Lupuls 5.25M LTIR at the deadline, to help get into the playoffs.

Win/ Win for both teams.
