Young GM in Arizona maybe the thinking is different.
Leafs are rebuilding so if and I say IF they Trade there 1st Overall and I was Uncle Lou this is what I would want in a Trade.

Toronto Trades
1st Overall Pick 2016 (Matthews)
2nd Round Pick 2016 (Washington's)

Arizona Trades
Ekman-Larsson
RStrome
7th Overall Pick 2016
2nd Round Pick 2016

Then the Leafs could package that 7th Overall Pick 2016 along with Pits 1st Rounder and a Prospect to Vancouver for there 5th Overall to Draft Tkachuk or ANylander.

The Leafs do that they would start the 2nd Round Drafting high as well as having OEL plus RStrome and one of Tkachuk or ANylander, it would make signing Stamkos make more sense and the rebuild would be in great shape.

Even if that doesn't happen Drafting Matthews is still a positive move for the Leaf Team.

If Arizona wants Matthews here's a solid deal

Dylan Strome,Max Domi,Arizona 1st RD 7th overall,1st Rd 22nd(NYR),2nd Rd 37th
And 2018 1st round swap. whichever is highest pick between 2 teams
For
1st overall,Lupul, Michalek and 2018 1st round swap. whichever is lowest pick between 2 teams

If Arizona really wants Matthews without giving up on Ekman-Larson this may do it. Arizona needs contracts to get to cap and Michaleks brother is already in Arizona and Lupuls bad contract needs to be thrown in. just a thought

I like it. I'd throw in gardiner with the first overall with lupal for that package. I'd get rid of the pick swaps and take prongers contract back.
