Leafs trade Agostino
Edmonton trades Rattie

So I wonder, if Leafs can protect seven forwards and three defensemen, what would happen if we stuck Hyman on defense for a few games and re-labelled him as a defenseman? Would be be able to protect him along with Rielly and Dermott? This is not a joke question either. Lots of players over the years have played both forward and defense (Harpur for example) . If we can label Hyman a defenseman, we can protect him.

Just trying to think of ways to game the system, like any good GM would. Lol.

I know there is a games required to make a player exempt but have no clue if there is a position games required to make a players position based on games played.

Play hyman at D a game just for fun so you can protect him and 2 other D wih 7 forwards. I mean 10 is better than 8 right?

If this can happen its quite the little flaw and as we see the leafs expose flaws in every system. Leafs sports management team working overtime and getting it done.

Heck ya! That’s what I’m talking about. Lol. If there are flaws in the system, Leafs should be looking at ways to capitalize. If this could actually work, then Leafs just saved themself a ton of problems.

Mars bar pointed out yesterday that Sandin needs to be protected. So does Lili and Bracco. I think Hyman least of the worries lol.

Ian White, Byfuglien, Harpur, Federov. These are just the four players off the top of my head I could think of that played both forward and defense. So if we could throw Hyman out as a defenseman a couple minutes each games wonder if that would be enough to get the exception? Lol. I doubt it, but you never know. Every legal document has loopholes, and I’m pretty sure the expansion draft rules are filled with them. Just got to use some creativity is all.

Babcock would have to put it in his opening lineups game card to the refs before game showing hyman is a dman in the lineup. that way its proof on paper. maybe play a 4F 1D stategy when hyman is out there. either way its a pretty interesting idea

Entry level contract guys don't count in expansion draft or nylander would of had to be protected as he had the time spent professionally between marlies and leafs to cause toronto to have to protect him but he wasn't protected because they said all ELC players and all unsigned draft picks are exempt from the draft.

The 2 year professional playing time goes for those guys who spent years in minors but aren't on ELC. guys who were like leivo and leipsic who had their ELC slide 4 years and still weren't on the main team thus having to sign a deal in year 4 professional year thus making them have to be protected if leafs chose to.

Liljegren is playing in his 3rd professional year so his slide gets him past next summer as final chance to make leafs on ELC. i think 2021 due to being his 4th pro year he must sign RFA contract thus leafs may need to protect him. Sandin is safe because last year was his pro slide year. This year and next year are years 1 and 2 thus making him exempt for draft. Bracco i think is the same situation as liljegren as this is year 3 with AHL club and then after next season he must sign RFA deal thus needing to be protected.

Thats how i interpred the rules anyways. please inform me if i'm wrong in any way. the rules are confusing in the whole entry level contacts and the ELC slide rule for each year a guy is a pro in ahl but not in but on ELC.

@LeafsLife

Sandin and Liljegren are still on ELC, and are therefore automatically protected. Randy was first to point that our, and he is right. So still Rielly and Dermott and a third (Hyman) has.

@Craigger

I think you got it right. Obviously I went and checked all the rules after the last couple posts, and from what I can tell, Sandin, Liljegren, and Bracco are all protected.

Which means, if we can game the system by putting Hyman on defense a few games, then he could theoretically be our third defenseman protected.

Like I said earlier, if Sandin, Liljegren, Bracco etc weren’t protected, we would have read a thousand million articles telling us this fact, along with suggestions to play it out. There is no doubt in my mind that these guys are all protected. Dubas made maximum use of the slide rule at a crucial time, and he deserves credit for that.

Well done again Dubas. You just might be the best GM in Leafs history if you keep it up. Still, would really liked to have seen MNM all signed eight years. That’s the biggest mistake so far. Now instead of 8 years window of opportunity, we get 5.

5 years is all the time he could buy himself. Instead of eight, he tightened the choke leash by three. If we lose a couple of those guys to free agency, we lose, period.

Good luck Dubas. Looks like it will be one helluva ride. I’m more excited than last time I went to Disneyland.

What I don’t get, how come when it gets even the slightest bit technical, with ratios and futures and so on, that DeadHeadWing clams up. Like he doesn’t understand these basic equations that anyone in Canada who has ever played sports, of any type, has been taught since they first laced up skates.

So tell me once again DeadHeadWing, how is it that you think you know more than at least the three regular contributors (LeafsGM, Craigger, MarsBars) plus all the other Toronto fans on this site? Toronto is actually Hockey Central. The game lives and breathes as the Leafs do. We all three at least played hockey, and I suspect Craigger and MarsBars are coaches. And still you know more than everyone on this site? rubbish. You’re not actually Doug Armstrong are you? Because the way you talk sure seems like you really want to be him bad.

Thanks LeafLife and LeafsGM

I hate coaching. Not only do you have pressure of winning but then you got horrible parents. i'm not always positive but when it comes to anyone from jr and up the ranks they better than any of us so why point out every flaw. there is good in every player at this level

Ill point out a players fault if a player is getting overhyped.

I think RedWing would be shocked at how many training facilities and camps we have in the gta alone. Hockey is central in Canadian sports, with basketball, baseball, soccer, football all far behind. Who dominates hockey? That’s right, Canada. Not St. Louis, whose captain is Canadian.
