After trading away Zaitsev, the Leafs need to do this:

Pierre McGuire said that he believes the Carolina Hurricanes will try to trade defenseman Dougie Hamilton. McGuire added that the Hurricanes won't be trading defenseman Brett Pesce.

The rumour is also that the Canes want to extend Justin Faulk

To CAR: F - K. Kapanen + D - A. Borgman

To TOR: D - D. Hamilton

Hamilton is signed for 2 more years at $5.75M.

We would need a long term asset coming back in return to go along with Hamilton. Two years of Hamilton for close to a decade of Kapanen and Borgman doesn’t seem fair to me.

think they should try for Slavin---he is going to be a true #1 defensemen . I would be consider trading Kapenan, Johansson, Zaitsev and a 3-to a 7th draft round pick.

For me, I like Hamilton. It's likely that Kapanen signs a bridge deal anyways. Yes, the leafs don't have control over Hamilton, but I am sure they can sign him to an extension once his deal runs out.
