Seems like an overpayment, but I doubt Edmonton makes this trade still. McDavid is the face of the NHL. Not only does he sell tickets, but all those jersey sales and other merchandise and product sales really adds up. No way
Matthews sells out as much product as McDavid. Edmonton doesn’t care if they keep losing as long as the money keeps rolling in. And as long as McDavid is on the team, the money will keep rolling in. Simple as that.
