Leafs trade Hollowell, Hoefenmeyer
SJ trades Merkley the Jerkley

Hoefenmeyer is LHD, so swapping him for Merkley makes sense for both teams.

Hoefenmeyer might be closer to nhl ready than Merkley, which SJ might want more, despite Merkley seemingly having the higher ceiling (though that’s debateable) .

Leafs get another A-prospect player for RHD and don’t give up anything off the team to do so.

I’m in on this deal. Hollowell looks good this year but in a b league so hard to know what that will equate too. Both leafs D will be great AHL guys fill in 7th D at nhl level while merkley has top 4 potential if he matures.

Merkley could be a d version of bracco though so that’s my warning.

I guess they can spend a few more years seeing what they got with him. He is stuck at 3RHD for many years if he does make the team. All depends on how SJ performs next year. Everyone expected them to contend, and the fact they crashed so badly last year was a real wake up call for them. It serves as a reminder too that once a player hits 30, no matter how good, the likelihood of a major regression in play can be expected.

So do you use any of these new fancy evaluation tools when you scout, or are you strictly an eye test kind of guy. I don’t have enough time to watch as many games as I would like anymore. It’s basically all Leafs for me these days. So I’m stuck relying on analyst and scouting reports. I think these new models have some value, but it really only puts a number to what anyone who watches the game and knows what to look for already knows. Relying on them 100% is silly. I enjoy using them, but try not to take too much out of them. Like the example I posted a few days ago about Robertson being a 40+ point player next year. While I’m hoping it is true, it’s so hard to say. Especially with a boom or bust prospect like him. He’s either a star like Gaudreau, or he’s not making the league at all. For obvious reasons, he is not the type of player that gets used in the bottom six.

I dig deep within the numbers. However even numbers get wrong sometimes. In order to get the numbers you have to fully trust the person coming up with the numbers. I mean sometimes a blocked shot or zone entry are missed after all getting the info to get the numbers is an eye test. Lots of video data that you hope noone was off their game to collect.

So in the end seeing is believing even if you have all the number data first. Just like dubas he collects data but then sends out his staff to see if data matches the eye test.

Cant have 1 with out other.

2002 draft

Nash gets back to back 30 goal seasons with London and Columbus takes chance on him 1st overall and he gets 40 points 1st year then 41 goals 2nd year

Lupul gets 50 plus in draft year and doesn’t get a chance till following year in nhl so plays another jr year

Bouchard grabbed 120 plus points on 40 goals and doesn’t even crack 30 points the next year in nhl and barely has a career

Judging by the eye test as a he scout I was shocked lupul didn’t go 1st. He had size and speed like Nash but a better shot

Bouchard was one heck of a passer with good size as well. I had him over Nash

Nash was a great jr but couldn’t even get the knights in the playoffs.

So by the advanced stats and eye test the other 2 seemed like safer picks yet in the end Nash was by far the best player at nhl level. Even both eye and numbers test get wrong as well .

Scouts hit and miss all the time. TV analysts do as well. It’s all part of the process.

Sorry Nash did do jr playoffs but mike strathoupolos I always thought was the driver of those knights teams Nash was on

P-M Bouchard got 140 points in his draft year. Wowserrzz.

I actually liked Lupul. Lol. He was the only player that would get in a fight. And he would get his ass kicked every time. But that never stopped him from trying again. I used to love watching him “fight”. And he was the only guy on the team that would fight back when he was on it.

Too bad he was made of porcelain.

Why is marner in like very trade in my opinion marner is the best offensive nose on the leafs and why has no one noticed the great plays he makes every game only matthews. Marner had a 94 point season 2 years ago and didn’t make the all star team Matthews had what 76 and made the all star game? What is this marner is so underrated.
