Thinking a 2 part trade here.

Assuming the Leafs are close to the playoffs, why not this:

To COL: F - K. Kapanen + D - T. Dermott + 2017 1st round pick (top 10 protected)

To TOR: C - M. Duchene

then

To CBJ: C - T. Bozak

To TOR: 2017 2nd round pick + 2018 4th round pick

With these 2 deals, the Leafs add a younger C (4 years younger), although they give up their 1st they get back another 2nd and enter the draft with 3 2nd's (the 4th is already traded to ANA)

Matthews, Duchene and Kadri form a solid 1-2-3 for many years

Sakic's value of duchene would mean leafs add. at least a 2nd rd pick

Duchene would be a sick player to add but I feel like this would be rushing our rebuild. Kappy and Dermott are going to turn out to be sweet prospects then the 1st will most likely be useful too since we have Mark hunter scouting for us. I personally feel like we'd be giving away too many assets.

Dermott has a chance to be top 4 dman but kappy is worth throwing into a deal to get duchene.
There has to o be some reason kappy is still wit the marlies ( i know he's injured now)

Duchene isn't what leafs need. They need to build up their back end. The resources to get duchene would set leafs back first 2017 Kapanan Neilson and probably another piece no thanks.
