So all of these reporters and insiders are all talking about a rebuild compared to a retool.
Let's all just agree that if Toronto trades for players and some picks that this team could be changed and complete next year.
Matthews, Nylander, Domi and Rielly all need to be told that the team is not moving forward with them, after ten years of no playoff success.
They can all provide two to three teams that they would be willing to waive to go to.
If they refuse they will be sat in the press box until they give their list.
So we need a GM with balls and a stern plan to move forward without these players.
Here are some proposed trades for all four players and don't forget all of the other players that need to go,
Carlo, Robertson, Maccelli
Toronto trades Matthews
To
Utah for Gabe Smith, Cole Beaudoin, Maverick Lamoureux
OR
Toronto trades Matthews, Robertson, Carlo
To
Anaheim for Mason McTavish, Pavel Minytukov, Nathan Gaucher, Sam Colangelo, Judd Caulfield
Toronto trades Nylander and Carlo
To
New York Rangers for Lafreniere, Cuylle and Brandon Schneider
Toronto trades Rielly, Cowan, Maccelli
To
Utah for Shane Wright
Toronto trades Domi
To
Columbus for 4th
Try to sign UFAs
Jeremy Lauzon
Anthony Mantha
AJ Grier
Phillip Kurashev
Jamie Oleksiak
Logan Stanley
Just some targets to help with the team.
Team would be faster, stronger and younger.

Love that Rangers trade. I can't see them being interested.

The problem with trading Matthews is that you’re trading a number 1 centre and not getting one back. I’m open to moving anyone except for Matthews, Knies and Cowan this offseason. If it looks the same next year, then you commit to a rebuild and move Matthews with 1 year left on his deal.

Thanks for the post Parkgardens. Apparently you disagree with my earlier proposal but decided not to comment.
So I need half a day to share why I’m not a fan of yours, but for my mental health I’ll do it more succinctly.
As Goat stated, you need a L1C.
There is absolutely no way the Leafs can get a better one than Matthews, so forget trying to trade him for something worthwhile in the UFA market and you certainly have not done it by trade.
None of your Utah players are proven, so you’re throwing darts.
I’ve seen Smith here in Moncton. He’s a bottom6 NHL C with some physicality if and when you get him angry.
Your trade for Wright is simply bad!
Cowan will be better, Maccelli is better right now and Rielly gets you that on his own.
And Kraken doesn't need Rielly; they already have Montour and Dunn as offensive Dmen.
The trade to Anaheim needs to be avoided at all costs.
Simply not nearly enough back. Mintyakov is, I grant you, a strong NHL player today. McTavish is decent but overrated and hardly an answer to the Leafs. Colangelo hasn’t made the Ducks even when they were a poor team. Gaucher will take two years more and Caulfield is a 25yo AHLer.
And you’re giving too much to get the three Ranger players who I do like but ask what have they really done with NYR in their SC quest to think they will do more in Toronto?
Your proposal is a rebuild not a retool so I’m not at all on your page.
Please try again! On a retool please.

dude the matthews to utah trade is a complete disgrace. the only logical explanation is you just started watching hockey this year or you are a habs fan and you're trolling.
Actually all of these trades are awful not just the Matthews one.

If I’m trading Matthews to Anaheim I’m getting one of Carlsson, Gauthier, or Sennecke back as part of the package not McTavish.
