To rid themselves of Horton's contract for next season, here's an option

To ARI: F - N. Horton + 2019 4th round pick (STL)

(cap hit is $5.3M for 2 years, cash is $4.5 + $3.6 = total of $8.1M)

To TOR: F - D. Bolland

(cap hit is $5.5M for 1 year, cash is also $5.5M)

Free's up the cap space for the next season when Matthews and Marner's deals hit!

I like the idea. Not sure if Arizona will pay $2.6M for a 4th round pick though ($8.1M - $5.5M) .

Probably would have to give Arizona a better prospect or pick for doing us the favor of taking on Horton’s contract.

Horton doesn't count towards the cap. LTIR.

I was always under the impression Horton was LTIR as well. This is the first I’ve heard he didn’t count towards LTIR. Can you explain why he isn’t?

It's my understanding that you need to count the contract as part of your cap prior to the start of the year, then you can place the player on LTIR and get relief. I could ne wrong, but that is the way I understood it.

That’s right. But my reading of Jayfern’s comment seems to me that he is saying Horton doesn’t count toward LTIR at all. Maybe I’m interpreting his comment wrong though. I thought Horton was covered by LTIR and once season started could be discounted from cap. That’s why I like your idea to trade him if we can. Because with such large signings coming up next year, is good to get cap hit as low as possible.
