Leafs can afford JVR...

JVR would be willing to sign a 4 year, 7 million dollar contract per year.

The leafs can't afford that.

However, they can pay JVR the same amount of money over the course of 4 years.

The leafs are going to have a ton of cap space this upcoming year.

The leafs could offer JVR:

A 1 year contract year contract for 7 million and a conditional 9 million if he signs an extension for 3 years at 4 million.

Meaning he would get paid:

1st year: 16 million
2nd year: 4 million
3rd year: 4 million
4th year: 4 million

He would get paid the same amount of money over the course of 4 years.

The leafs would be able to afford this and JVR would accept the same amount of money.

Yeaaa. that looks a lot like cap circumvention lol.

That’s just crazy.

I’m not even sure if NHL rules would allow a contract like that. But supposing it is permissible. What happens if JVR gets hurt or drops in production 2nd year?

There would have to be all kinds of clauses embedded into this contract. It would be a legal nightmare, and would set a bad precedent for the league.

JVR is not even worth $7M a year. If that’s the kind of money he is seeking, then Leafs can find better options.

I don't think you understand how the cap works. It's also not a circumvention of the cap because regardless of how much is actually being paid every year the cap is based on the AAV of the total contract which would be 7 million per season.

JVR should have been traded along with Bozak at the deadline. I was fed up with JVR's defending at his current contract. His defending is not going to change at 7 mil.
