The Preds are the team that need to make a deal here. They will lose Ellis by trade or draft; might as well be a trade.

I would make the trade this before the EDraft:

TOR: JVR, Carrick, Wong RW (exempt), Timashov W (exempt), cond. 2nd 2018 (if JVR doesn't re-sign before the 2018 draft)

NSH: Ellis, Fiala (exempt), Trenin (exempt)

The Preds need to move Ellis; the Leafs could really use Ellis.
The Preds could use JVR for another cup run next year, even as just a rental.

The Leafs are giving up Carrick, Wong and Timashov (all low cost for the budget minded Preds) for 2 decent prospects; Fiala and Trenin as additional value for JVR. JVR > Ellis.

Costly in terms of talent for the Preds; but they are in a predicament and this allows them to go 7,3,1; protecting 7 of the remaining decent fowards and their big 3 Dmen.

There is only so many teams with room for a Dman (4). The rest have to give one up to get one; so there will be something left for Vegas to pillage, no matter what happens.

They can draft up to 13 Dmen and 3 goalies plus the mandatory 14 forwards who can all be young and cheap or experienced and at retirements edge.

Didn't the Preds GM say he will trade half the team rather than give up a good player to Vegas for nothing; or was that someone else.

The leafs don't have Wong, the marlies had him on a ATO. We can't trade him.

he probably meant Moore if so, take out Carrick and switch Lindberg for Liepsic.
