Rielly - Pietrangelo

$5M - $9M = $14M

Muzzin - Ristolainen

KESSEL B/0 + $1.2M
HOSSA LTIR - 5.25
= -$4M

Salary Cap = $81.5M

Leafs' Cap = $85.5M

IF the Leafs

Trade Kerfoot and sign a 3C for $2M

And/Or

Buffalo retains $2M in salary on the Ristolainen deal

And/Or

Trade Engvall

They are within $1M of the cap.

*Could Ottawa sign Pietrangelo and trade him to the Leafs retaining salary? Similar ideas were mentioned with Tampa Bay and Detroit regarding Sergachev...

TORONTO
Johnson $3.4M
2nd round 2021

Ottawa
Pietrangelo $9M
Retained $2M

Staring Line Up

HYMAN - MATTHEWS - NYLANDER

ROBERTSON - JANKOWSKI - SIMMONDS

CROUSE - SPEZZA - BARBANOV

RIELLY - PIETRANGELO

MUZZIN - RISTOLAINEN

KORPISALO

Teams can be over the salary cap during the off-season so the order of trades in this scenario isn't too important.

LTIR counts as a roster spot during offseason and his cap counts against team during this time frame

You are allowed to be 10% over cap at any time during off season but need to be cap compliant by 12 noon day 1 of regular season . Players can be put on LTIR at midnight of same days long as league approves it.

So during offseason your LTIR player takes spot of any 1 of your players on 2 way deal thus replace that players minimal cap hit with the expensive injured player.

So to use your first lineup as example. The only forwards on 2 way deals are barbanov and Robertson. Since Leafs don’t want to make decision on Robertson yet (he can’t go to minors but since he is on main roster now if they take him off the roster right now he is forced to go to jr as that’s only roster move to make for him right now unfortunately) they’d once again take the Russian back to non roster players lineup (poor guy)

So now hossa is 4th line on your lineup even though he is hurt. Leafs add hossa 5.25 cap hit - barbanov .9 cap hit adding 4.35 to leafs 89.9 Hit you pointed out. Then add kessel 1.2 million and quick math is 95.45 cap hit.

10% 81.5 is 8.15 thus 89.65 is max any team at 1 time can have during offseason. Teams have to have 20 player min on their cap hit roster. Even taking out extra skaters this lineup is way too expensive.

As far as LTIR contracts once you place player on this his cap hit moves to LTIR. Then you must replace him with a roster player.

So in theory the best way to use this is during the offseason you have a roster of players that cost no more than 82.19 (81.5+min contract) in total making sure at least 1 of them are on 2 way non waiver deals. You get your hands on a known LTIR player replace that non contract with the injured players hit making sure his cap hit is less than the allowable 8.15 over cap limit. So in hossa case 82.19 team cap -.7 min player=81.49 ($1 less cap limit) + 5.25 hossa cap hit=86.74 which is under 10% allowed.

Then at midnight first day of season you put Hossa and his 5.25 cap hit on LTIR. Thus dropping team back to 81.49 cap. Now you get to replace hossa roster spot with any 1 player not on roster at this moment whom makes 5.25 or less in cap hit. Now your team is cap compliant even though it’s real cap hit is 81.49 plus whatever that roster replacement makes. Glitch in the system.

Problem is you can’t use this added value on existing roster players. Since all your players who make over a million dollars are 1 way guys you’d have to waive them first hope they don’t get picked up by another team and send them to non cap roster. then resend them through waivers now and again hope no teams pick them up even though now they are at half their price (you must pay other half if picked up) if you get lucky now you can use them to replace hossa if their hit is 5.25 or under. In reality this 5.25 cap hit usually gets replaced by a minimum salary guy but it still Makes them exceed cap by 699 grand so it’s still an effective move. If you get super lucky a solid 2-5 million UFA or non tendered RFA player could still be unsigned. You sign that player up to 5.25 million cap hit and now you have fully used this glitch to the max. Good luck still having that guy available though.

In most cases theses LTIR covers any trade you make for players make same or less than that LTIR contract during season who would regularly put you over cap but this glitch prevents that from happening. It also helps when guys making big money get hurt but not long enough for their cap hit to not count. Thus now you can replace injured player as well as the LTIR contract with 2 guys making under 5.25 combined. You don’t have star player but also can grab a better than minimum contract player to replace him. See how this helps

Your idea was good and your trades were solid but LTIR just doesn’t work how you thought this putting your team way over even during offseason

Hoped this helped
Sorry so long but so was yours lol.

This is completely insane. Half of these "trades" make no sense. Keep dreaming, Teams know Toronto is desperate for defenseman and try to get as much as they can from them. Johnson isn't worth anything, Kerfoot either. Dermott will not get you Ristolainen. Leafs would have to give up more. I don't think Dubas is going to trade Anderson. Why would a rival team like Ottawa help the leafs. You would have to give up more like a Roberston plus a 1st.

Another thing Roberston is still not NHL ready. He did decent in the 3 games he played but he's not even close to playing against NHL players. This may work in NHL 20 but not in real life.

If Anderson is worth Domi+ then I wouldn't make statements like "they are worth nothing". I didn't think so either but apparently they are.
