Sign and Trade

Maple Leafs resign JVR to a 5yr/USD $5.75 million/yr contract then trade JVR at the draft along with the 26th overall pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft to the Blackhawks for Brandon Saad and the 8th overall pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. Trade is contingent on whether prospect Joseph Veleno is available to be selected with the 8th overall pick. The Center position is an area of focus that the Leafs need to address both short and long-term and Veleno would be the perfect 1a to Matthews down the middle that can jump into the NHL in two years. Defencemen take longer to make the jump out of their draft year.

For 5 years at 5.75 leafs keep JVR. No way he gets less than Oshie on the market.

Terrible trade for Leafs. Terrible trade for Chicago. Chicago needs to get younger and cheaper. They don't do that by trading a high pick in a loaded draft.

Im not even going to comment on the trader by LeafsFuture.

I can’t see any reason Chicago would do this. Saad is just as good as JVR, even though he’s having a downer year (as all Chicago is), and downgrading their pick is silly.

All these trades involving Marleau are great, and all in good fun, but there’s just one sticky situation: Marleau has a NMC. I highly doubt he’s going to accept a trade to anywhere but San Jose, or maybe a top centender like Pittsburgh. NY is probably not going to make his short list. Besides, why would Leafs want to trade Marleau? They got exactly what they expected when they signed him. He’s been worth every penny of his contract. I’m sure Lou didn’t sign him just to trade him after only one season.

The Oshie deal was terrible. Oshie is not worth more than a 5 million/ yr player and JVR is not worth more than 5.75 million/ yr at best. Leafs would do well not to keep JVR, Bozak and Komarov. Leafs need aggressive, hard-hitting forwards that can chip in some goals to complement the skilled wingers they have. Same goes for their defence. Then we can talk about an extended playoff run for the Leafs.

@nylandermagic, you think the Leafs need aggressive players? Like a Lucic and a Maroon? Cause that worked out perfectly for Edmonton. The league is changing and the more skilled your team is the better it is, look at how the Leafs have played without Martin compared to how they played with him .
