First off, I'd like to congratulate the Toronto maple leafs on winning the draft lottery, I've been a die hard fan ever since I was a kid! Not only is having the 1st overall selection a game changer but it also gives the ability for a gm to explore all options available, and even though my guess is that the leafs will keep their pick and select Matthews, I'm still wondering if there's any chance that a deal might be worked out that would benefit both party's moving forward. Below is a trade that I would think is both reasonable and realistic:
Toronto:
1st overall (A. Matthews)
Washington 2nd pick
4th pick
T. Bozak
S. Percy
Arizona:
7th overall (Chychrun/ Juolevi)
1st round pick 2017
M. Domi
K. Wood
L. Domingue
Toronto gets hometown boy Max Domi, whom I believe will absolutely kill it in the league for years ahead and has chemistry with Marner . A great Dman prospect in wood and another in this years draft, an above average nhl ready goalie, and of course a 1st round selection next year! There is no chance Strome is getting dealt, he is untouchable as well as Larsson . Arizona gets the guy they been dreaming of, a 2nd/ 3rd line centre, dman prospect and a couple of picks this year to sweeten the deal.
This trade opens up the possibility of signing stamkos and maybe a dman veteran.
Sign S. Stamkos - 7yr/ 68M
Sign B. Campbell - 2yr/ 7M
JVR - Stamkos - Brown
Domi - Kadri - Marner
Soshnikov - Nylander - Hyman
Greening - Laich - Komarov
Reilly - Campbell
Gardiner - Hunwick
Corrado - Carrick
Bernier/ Sparks/ Domingue.

Strome is untouchable?? He just had it handed to him by the Knights. He wasn't even competitive. Hardly untouchable. Same CRAP I've been hearing about Drysaitl in Edm. Edmonton who traded the greatest most "UNTOUCHABLE" centre A+++ "ever" to play the game.
There is no such thing as untouchable. So please stop that nonsense.
As for your trade:
Your trade is giving away way too much. The Leafs should be getting almost that return for just Matthews(A+). Domingue is a trivial return and you over rate Domi(A-). Wood (A- or B+) is a passable return and fits the Leafs needs and timeline. The 2017 pick will be somewhere around 16 +/- a couple of spots. The 7th pick overall this year will get you an A- player at best.
Nothing stellar nothing gained.
The most important point is that you are subtracting an A- vet and an A+ pick from the Leafs ; to get an A- pick at best in an area the Leaf are desperate to improve in.
To pry that A+ "Foundational"? center away is going to take a lot. (see the Lindros (A+) (not a generational player which is A++) trade - especially the NY deal that didn't go through).
Note: Maloney did get fired immediately after saying he wouldn't put OEL on the trade table to get Matthews. Hmmmmm. NHL owners do tend to be "Brian Burke" like.
B. Campbell is 36 years old and will be using a walker soon.
As for your lineups (given your trades):
Swap Kadri and Nylander; then your 3rd line will become the most irritating line in the NHL, and will draw penalties at a record rate.

Matthews alone would get the first three. If Ariz. wants Matthews then they will have to pay. that includes OEL or Strome

I would like to see Nylander, Matthews, and Domi

thought the Domi love fest would die after a year. He's good. he's not great, won't ever be great. Let it go.
