Trade idea (just for discussion, I know cap doesn’t fully work here) :
To Columbus:
William Nylander and Alex "alex" Nylander
The Toronto
Boone Jenner
Conor Garland
Kirill Marchenko
Miikael Pyyhtiä
From the Toronto perspective, this would be a major shake-up of the core, but it would bring in a lot of useful pieces.
Jenner would likely step into the 2C role behind Matthews and take some of the defensive matchup load. He brings leadership, two-way reliability, and physicality.
Garland would be a strong fit in a 3rd line scoring/ transition role, adding speed and puck skill.
Marchenko is the KEY piece coming back. He’s already developed into a legit top-six wnger, and while he’s currently more of a second-line winger, there’s still top- line potential in his game within 1–2 years if his development continues. He would have the chance to eventually step into a top-line RW role in Toronto.
Pyyhtiä would be a high-motor depth addition for the 4th line, bringing energy, forechecking and versatility.
Yes yes, Toronto would be losing a true elite 1st-line winger in Nylander, and there’s no direct 1-for-1 replacement in the deal. But the hope would be that Marchenko develops into that type of player over time.
Believe Kirill M.
Also, from a “human side” angle, the Nylander brothers being together in Columbus could be a factor in terms of comfort and fit, even if that obviously isn’t the main driver of NHL trades.
Cap-wise it’s not perfectly balanced, and I know that’s a small issue.
It’s a risky move for Toronto, but the idea is to redistribute the value across multiple useful pieces, while betting on Marchenko’s upside to grow into a top-line role.
High risk, high reward type of deal.
So deal or not deal.

Boone Jenner is a UFA.

I was just going to mention that too Hrenklin, as I believe you had pointed out in a earlier post. And I had forgot about. I like Boone Jenner and think he has been a great player for a long time. But we are in trouble if he or JT are our #2 Centre next year.
I would not mind one of them playing the others wing with a good young guy on the other wing on the 3rd line for another year during a transition stage. But not the 2nd line.

That said, Nylander for the remaining package doesn't even get a look at from the Leafs. Plus the Leafs cannot trade his brother. His brother is under contract to the Marlies not to the Leafs under an NHL contract.
At the end of the Marlies season he is a UFA.
Thisisit must have known this though from his professional scout friend and the multitude of Marlies games he attended this year.

How do you know that Alex won’t sign with Toronto in the summer? Sure, I should probably check every player’s contract situation, but sometimes things get forgotten, that’s just life. Sorry for that.
Sometimes I ask out of curiosity which players Toronto is actively scouting. Sometimes I get information, and sometimes I just go with my own gut feeling. I probably have around 10 notebooks worth of “scouting-style” notes on players from about 20 years.
I watch games a bit differently than fans who are only interested in winning, I pay attention to player movement and how individuals perform, and then I compare that to Toronto and whether they might need a player like that.
Did you know, suffer67, that Chase Reid is ranked higher than Verhoeff in Toronto’s system? I don’t think you do...but assumptions aren’t the same as knowledge.

What does Chase Reid being rsted higher than Verhoeff in Toronto's eyes have to do with this post. Every team in league has different assessments of those two players in what they are looking for.
I must be a fool because I am one of those fans interested in winning and I am pretty sure most on here are as well.
And most of us don’t suggest players on a whim, we assess their pros, cons and their fit here as well.
Speaking of making assumptions and knowledge. You made an assumption I don’t know Toronto has Reid rated higher. How do you know that I was or not aware of that?
