Leafs trade N. Kadri and the #25th overall pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft to Carolina for N. Hannifin and V. Rask.

Leafs sign John Tavares to a 7 yr - $77 million contract

I’m not sure about this one.

On the surface it looks like a good trade for both teams. Carolina gets a gritty goal scoring upgrade at center, which they need, and Leafs get a very promising young defenseman to replace Gardiner on his eventual departure.

I realize the intention of trading Kadri is to free up the space for Tavares. But I really got to think Leafs will be loathe to trade Kadri and that sweet contract of his. The return you are offering is high quality and probably fair. Hanifin looks like he has a bright future ahead of him, and will be 2LHD (or basically our second 1LHD behind Rielly) . And Rask solves our 3C problem.

Tavares is undoubtedly a superstar and upgrade over Kadri, but imo, I think we should keep Kadri in this scenario and trade Nylander + for Hanifin. Forget about Rask all together.

The reason I think Carolina would want Wee Willie more than Kadri is that Nylander will be controlled for the next 8 years, while Kadri is UFA in four years. If Carolina is giving up Hanifin, who will be signing for eight years himself, I imagine the return player will have to be someone of equal contract duration, and Nylander fits the bill. They get Nylander for twice as long as they would have Kadri.

If Leafs could keep Kadri and sign Tavares, they would undoubtedly have one of the best trio’s at center, if not the best. We have a lot of high quality wingers to surround these guys with, and would be able to credibly roll three scoring lines, with each line centered by a 30+ goal scorer.

It’s a different take on the Hanifin trade, and I like it. It’s a credible proposal and has some real chops to it. I just don’t know how I feel about trading Kadri. Right now he’s basically our only center behind Matthews, and a very good one at that.

Rask 3rd line Center
Hanifin on the second pairing with zaitsev
No brainer.

If Leafs can sign Tavares? That's a pretty big if to base trading your 2nf best center for! Especially when Leafs only have 2 centers at the moment.

Blue oyster Allan you misunderstood. Leafs sign Tavares first then make the trade with Carolina. Read and then interpret before replying. Or are you one of those people who can’t do that sort of thing?
