Doughty’s contract doesn’t expire until end of next season.

I agree with you that Leafs are probably better off waiting and see if he hits the market first before making trade proposal. I would hate to trade for him without having a contract in place and then have him walk after season end.

I suppose it all depends where we are in terms of playoff picture next year. If Leaf’s management thinks we are true contenders, maybe they will take a run at a big name like Doughty. Only time will tell.

I'd love to have Doughty as well but Carlson (WASH) is UFA and RHS so that's who the target should be. I'm going to double check but I'm almost positive Doughty is UFA this year along with Tavares.

Next year is the big year when a lot of very good defensemen will be hitting the market: Doughty, Karlsson, OEL, Ellis, Myers, Schmidt, and of course, Jake Gardiner. Just to name a few.

Not everyone is going to re-sign with their current team. Toronto has a very real opportunity to land a top-notch UFA defenseman without sacrificing any part of their future. It will be very interesting to see how it all unfolds.
