I know that the Leafs do not want to give up a roster player, and I do not want to trade Kapanen but I am just spit balling what it would take

To CAR: Kapanen and Zaitsev and a 2020 3rd

to TOR: Pesce, Ferland and J. Gauthier

Leafs need toughness and an upgrade RHD. I agree trading with Carolina to fill the void of both makes sense.
Something like this may work better.
Car: Pesce and Ferland
Tor: brown, Johnsson and Zaitsev ( add a pick if needed)
