Leafs trade Nylander, Dermott
Vegas trades Schmidt, Virtanen

I’m not saying Nylander, or Marner, or any single other player on the Leafs is the root cause of all our problems. We have multiple problems. And they start with the unbalanced roster at the top.

How would you like to take a pay cut so that your Captain and Alternate Captains can be paid, arguably overpaid?

It works both ways.

I don’t judge any of the players for taking the most they can get. It’s their right. I do fault the GM for signing three players to such huge contracts. We currently have three of the highest paying contracts in terms of AAV of all time on the roster. And MMT are also the three highest paid players in real dollar terms as well.

Not only does the studs’n’duds philosophy unbalanced the roster, it tends to divide the locker room.

No one ever asked Marner to take a pay cut. At least I didn’t. But the guys like Dermott and the rest of the “duds” are certainly being expected to be take one. How is that fair?

I like this deal. Yeah probably meant to put Vancouver it happens.

Less of forward more in defence type of deal. This really makes the leafs have big 4 in terms of D getting paid. 21 plus million not bad.

I’d take it

Would Dubas trade nylander yet?
Or is there a time minimum before he dares shows everyone he was wrong.

Thanks Craigger

This would also be a huge gain for Vancouver since they only traded a 3rd for Schmidt. Helluva deal for them in the end.

Sorry Randy, I guess I was the one who was a bit lit last night at 1:30am when I posted this. Lol.

This deal does not make the Leafs better. Schmidt is a natural LD and would be buried behind both Rielly and Muzzin. Nylander is also the best player in this trade.

Not sure Schmidt is what we need, although he is a solid d-man. Virtanen has arb rights and scored 18 last year, so who knows what an arbitrator might award. If cap savings were significant, I would be more in on this one, but as it is, I would want more back from Van.

Schmidt plays RHD though Torontobuds. Same as Hainsey and Brodie. And he is very good there as well. He was a standout performer for Vegas this year in the playoffs. I can’t put my finger on it, but I still feel like the Leafs defense is lacking. And a guy like Schmidt, who is a younger Muzzin type, could be exactly what it is we need.

I can understand why some coaches would insist on a proper left-right handed combination, but in my, admittedly limited, experience, I actually liked playing the right side instead of my natural side. I had a wicked shot, and the shooting angle is much better from that side. Less need to try to move towards the centre of the ice to get a better angle. I could just let it rip from the wall if I really wanted. It’s a lot harder to do that from the other side of the rink.

I don’t know about the pro leagues, where carrying it up ice and being able to protect it better against the wall might make a big difference, but in the amateur leagues I played in, the big difference came in my shot. So long as we got the puck up ice and into the other teams zone, I wanted to be on the right side every time, so when that pass came, I was able to slam that biscuit home as hard as I could. It was a lot harder to do that from my natural side.
