Leafs trade Marner
Dallas trades Heiskenan, Benn

Gotta take the bad with the good. Benn to s overpriced and on the downslope of his career, but he is still reasonably productive and hoping that on a more talented team he can keep his numbers inflated for a few more years. Heiskenan is the prize obviously. He is our long term solution for 1RHD. There is no doubt that this kid is the real deal and having both him and Reilly on the team starts to smell a lot like a Norris trophy in the future.

I should have checked CapFriendly first. I didn't realize that Benn has another five years left on his contract at a whopping $9.5M. I thought he had shorter term. So unless Dallas retains, significantly, this deal is a no go.

The cap hit is a killer of many trades that on paper seem fair.

I don't know. Talent wise, we fleece Dallas. But if you take salaries into account, We will have cap troubles, worse than we already have.

You really think it's a fleecing? I don't know. Benn is doing so sh*tty he is at best a third line player for us. Heiskenan is a stud. But is he better at his position than Marner is at his position? Again, very hard to say. Especially since both are still developing. In a few years it might turn into a fleecing, by either team. Marner could break out and win the Art Ross and Heiskenan becomes a Norris winner. Or it could backfire and Heiskenan plateau's, or worse, regresses.

It's a bit of a risk for Leafs. I'm not sure if they would be willing to do this, even though Heiskenan is looking like the stud he was projected to be.

Benn is great, and so is Heskanen. This trade is ok, but I doubt either team does it.

Benn is a former art ross winner, and despite declining, he still has some value for sure. I say on sports net, they though a Marner for Heiskenan was fair and while I think Marner holds a slight edge, I wouldn't mind that trade. So yes, we get the better players for sure. But cap wise, we do horrible. so therefore, neither team does this deal, but I like the thought.

Heiskenan is still on his elc for one more year. Leafs would have to take scary back to offset Marners $11.5M cap hit. But I don't think I would want it to be Benn. Lol. That's a bit much for too long for my liking.

Pavelski and Radulov only have 2 years after this at a cap hit of $7M and $6.25M. Either one of them would be a better cap dump.

I believe heiskanen is untouchable. That guy is an absolute stud. I would trade Marner one for one for him any time. You may have better luck with Klingberg.

yup, in fact, he won it twice.

Jagr won the Art Ross like five times. I wouldn't give him $9.5M for five years after this either. Eventually players age out. And once decline sets in, it can be rapid. Look at Duncan Keith. He went from being 4th in Norris trophy voting to being a dump truck all within one year. It's important to watch for this after players hit 30. That's why I think the Spurgeon deal will come back to haunt Minnesota. He's a great player, no doubt about it. And they will likely get at least 3-4 years of good play. But by the seventh year, that cap hit is probably going to look like a boat anchor.

This deal would be great if the league gave out the compliance buyout it would then free up the space to resign Reilly and do something in free agency but I think Dallas likes Benn in their core.

I think sending Marner to Dallas for Heiskanen would definitely have to include cap coming back like Benn or Seguin and then I think Leafs have to add. maybe liljegren? seeing as we taking their young d.

Yeah, but seeing as they are taking our young stud forward, I think it kinda works out that way. The cap dump is exactly that. A dump. He adds minimal to the trade and is only included to balance salaries to make the trade feasible. Doesn't matter if it is Benn, who I am pretty sure Dallas would love to trade right now (he's been called out by upper management two years straight), or if it is Pavelski or Perry. Other than Heiskenan, the other incoming player holds either no value, or negative value for the Leafs.

Since it is Marner (you g, quality forward) for Heiskenan (young quality defenseman), then they don't get Liljegren unless they throw in Dellandrea.
