Mtl gets: Matthews
Tor gets: Weber, Kotkeniami, Domi, Suzuki, Primeau
I know this will never happen, be its fun to think about. T his would trigger a rebuild. We might contend in 3 years from now in this scenario. Mtl might add in this trade, hard too say.

If you took out Weber and replaced one of the centres (Suzuki or Kotkaniemi) with a winger like Pauling or Caufield, and you might get more attention. Problem is, none of those guys coming back is anywhere near close to the same level center Matthews was. So this trade kills our depth

It's a high risk/ high reward trade. It could set us up for the future big time, but I. The short term it is a step back for sure.

I fail to see how this kills our depth. Wouldn’t it add too it LGM?

Find another 22 year old centre that’s
6”3 and scores more than Matthews!
Leafs have dreamed of getting that for years!
#1 center and trade him?
Most Stanley Cup winners build around a stud
Like Matthews!
Don’t understand trading him when he is top 3 in league in scoring, a center and big and not even in his prime yet! He’s a star only to get better!
Only untouchable in any trade Dubas pulls off as Leafs boss . period!

@Farmboy

I was referring to our centre depth.

Kotkaniemi and Primeau aren't in the NHL (KK was dropped to AHL shortly after the new year) . So that means you get Domi and Suzuki. Theoretically you could slot either one in at centre. But neither is anywhere as good as Matthews. You add two possible centres, but only one of then will actually be playing centre. And no matter which one it is, it is a huge drop off in talent. That's what I mean by killing our depth.

Well, i guess if the leafs do trade matthews this package offered is pretty close to the what the return will be.

A guy as young skilled playing center, like matthews is, would change any franchise getting him.

The return would definetly start with a top 6 forward and top 4 dman who can be that right now for the leafs. I have to say Domi is the odvious and only choice here. I do like gallagher but he's 2 years older and is ufa next summer. Domi is rfa this year so if leafs made this trade hopefully they sign him 6-8 year between 5-6 million. he can play center but seems better on the wing. I guess if nylander and him platoon at center with hyman as the other forward that would be a solid line with 3 guys who can all play OK at center.

The habs have 2 top 4 RHD ready now in weber and petry. Weber is a actually more a 1RHD right now but for how much longer. When will his regression set in and how much will his play fall. His contract has 6-7 years left and he is pushing the wrong side of 30 soon. I love him now but ask me again in 3-4 years when knowing your stuck with that contract for 3-4 more years. Although not as good Petry is younger and only has 1-2 years left. During those years he won't be as good as weber but at least your not stuck with him. personally either guy wirks for me

Next leafs will definetly want at least 2 prospects. Habs have about 7 that would be worth a look. Suzuki is Gallagher 2.0 with more god given talent. He projects to be a line 2 center but for now is stuck on the wing on the big club until he develops more.
Kotkenami is another center who at first looked poised to be the next Saku Koivu. Unfortunetly year 2 sucked for him but if you believe in this kids talent then he might be that high risk high reward guy you want.
Poeling is a big kid who plays big. He had 1 amazing 1st game with the habs. Take that away and he seems pretty average. However, he does play center. He is a worker like hyman. If that's what you want he might be your guy.
Caufeld is a speedy goal scoring freak. Tiny but eho cares. You need to replace goals lost by matthews why not take a risk with this kid. Problem is you're hoping he can be the next debrinat when in fact he could end up destined to a minor league career. Another high risk high reward.
The next 3 i bring up because maybe toronto gets weber or petry and although good now they know in 3-4 years they need a replacement
Mete is very solid. May never be a true top 4 dman but still has game.
Brook is a hard shooting harf hitting RHD. Still very raw but so much upside
Fleury is another solid young defencemen. To me he is the least risky of the 3 but less upside as well.

Guess picking any 2 of these guys is really on what you like. Personally suzuki and brook are my picks but not too many wrong answers here

Last you threw in young goalie Primeau. can't go wrong with picking up this kid. he's ahead of Woll and Scott and by alot. Can he replace Andersen in 2 years? I don't know but why not see.

Overall i'd take this trade if matthews must go

Lets just hope it never comes to this though.
