Leafs trade Marner
For 2nd overall, plus a couple other picks/ prospects

With the money saved from Matthews, we sign Pietrangelo 7x$10.5M

I guess the thought is that we take on this monster of a kid, hope he turns out as good as he is projected, accumulate a few more picks or prospects, and bring in Pietrangelo.

The whole point I'm trying to make is that if we trade one of our $11M players, it gives us a return that helps us out for keeping a good core together indefinitely and frees up the cap space to bring in a big name acquisition off season.

It’s a good idea but for one no way Ottawa trades that pick for the sole purpose that they won’t be a good team for a while yet and will waste a lot of marners current contract you honestly have a better chance at Detroit’s puck due to the fact that they have some good players already in place and again petro for 7 years makes no sense paying a guy in his final years 10.5 mil.

Nobody wants marner unless you retain 2-3 million.

I bet there is all kinds of teams that would want Marner, even with his big paycheque. If someone is willing to pay Lucic $6M, there will be more than enough teams willing to pay Marner his $11M.

But Leafs1994 is right. Pietrangelo is not a player anyone should sign lease ng term to big money. He's getting old and is on his way down. He'll drop like a stone in water soon is my guess.

Wasn't Marner offered 12/ 7 from Columbus? Lots of teams will take him without retention I just have no idea what his value may be. In all reality a cancelled season may actually retract the cap which makes his cap hit that much worse.

The thing I don't like most is that all our top guys, MNMT, all have the bulk of their contracts as signing bonuses. That means they get past d no matter what, including for the lockout if it happens.

Marner didn't get an offer sheet. The rumor was that Columbus and maybe a few other teams wanted to offer sheet him, but it never materialized. I don't think there would be any problem trading Marner if Dubas really wanted to.
