How about:
Tor:
JVR
CLB:
RD David Savard
LW Scott Hartnell
2017 2nd rnd.
Tor-gets a decent RH D and a vet to tutor guts and determination to the rooks, and a pick.
CLB-gets JVR, gets cap relief, gives up a defenceman they can afford to give up.

Brutal trade, not nearly enough for JVR.

And what do you think should be added for JVR here?
Or do you just like to criticize without putting forward any content or value to the conversation.

taking on Hartnell is a horrible idea no matter what. He's got 3 years left in which he'll make twice what he's worth. His contract is untradeable. which is why he's still in Columbus. So you are talking about taking on a "decent" defenceman (your words), a 2nd, and a huge liability for a 30 goal scorer in his prime.NO THANKS.

Really? Hartnell is untradeable?
He got 49 pts last year; 60 the year before.
HOW MANY LEAFS GOT 49 PTS THIS YEAR????
He may be slowing down, but he will produce, and he will have a positive effect on the youngsters. He is not strictly a cap dump. He has "always" produced. That's the reason he is still with Columbus.
Any GM would be able to trade him. His contract(4.75 M for 3 years) is not that much for someone who produces every single year, just like JVR. And it won't be wasted money like Laich, Lupul, Michalek, and Cowen. What on earth are they worth in comparison; nothing.
Go take a look at his stats. Aside from the age difference between him and JVR; you would think you are looking at the same player(excluding PIM).
He backchecks, he's aggresive, he can fight, he can score, he can pass, he charges at the net, he leads by example. The Leafs need players of this type. Yeah, such a horrible idea!!
JVR is approaching the END of his prime and will want a large raise.
Stop looking at just the age and the contracts. Take a look at what the player delivered all through his career and what he can still deliver. It's better than any Leaf last year. It's not even close!!
Have you ever even watched him play?

stop trying to justify your proposed deal. Hartnell is 34. No team wants to take on a player at that age with 3 yrs. on his contract. I agree Hartnell was a very good player, but when they start to drop off in play. is usually at 34. or even long before. the 3 yrs.left scares all suitors off

@ferm.
What planet are you from. This is Canada Day where all kinds of old fogies get ridiculous terms (Lucic for example). Lucic will be 35/36 when he finishes his contract.
All kinds of players make it to 37. Yes he's declining, I said that if you bothered to read it. But he still got more points than any other Maple Leaf. He plays a tougher game than any other Maple Leaf.
Chimera 37 signed with Was. 2 years.
Backes 32 signed with Bos 5 years.
Campbell 37 signed with Fla.
Neilson 32 signed with Det. 6 Years!!
Fidler 36 signed with NJD
Liles 35 re-signed with Bos (and he's worthless)
Ott 33 Det (can't play worth crap)
Hampuis 33 Dal 2 years.
Stempniak 33 Car 2 years.
Lovejoy 32 NJD 3 years.
and so on and so on. Those are just the free agent signed recently as today. It doesn't include the scores of older players currently under contract.
Your argument bears no resemblance to reality.
Hartnell has tons of character and talent, even if they are starting to wain, but it is a known and proven commodity. When he's 37 he will still find another contract.
So "No team wants. " Please stop trying to justify nonsense.

you said it yourself. old fogies with ridiculous deals. and Hartnell is already one of them. Leafs not jumping off the bridge just because everyone else does.

Yeah, but when that old fogie who comes via trade and not as a FA, puts up more points, hits, fights, and leads more than any current Leaf; your argument that he's old falls apart. There is no massive contract here 3 years at 4.75, offset by JVR's contract for two which will then go up.
For JVR 27 we are getting
a draft pick (I think a 1st is too high given where CLB finished so I picked a 2nd) NOT TOO OLD IS HE.
David Savard 25 yr NOT TOO OLD IS HE. (and we need a RH D badly)
Scott Hartnell 34yr Plays better than most 25 yr olds and will last 3 more years (probably more) for the contract he is on. And he's much tougher than the pussies we have in our farm system.
Besides to even out the money they could have their choice of one of Michalek, Laich, Lupul, etc and that will even out the money but CLB still wants a cap dump on Hartnell. That is; if they even want to move him.
