Toronto trades William Nylander and Jacob Quillan to Detroit.
In return, Toronto receivess
Marco Kasper
Michael Brandsegg-Nygard
Emmitt Finnie
2nd-round pick.
Toronto obviously loses a true top-line winger in Nylander, but the idea is to retool around youth and flexibility rather than keep pushing with an aging core.
Kasper projects as a long-term 2C, and if his development continues (which it likely will), he could become a reliable two-way center for years. Brandsegg-Nygard adds a high-upside prospect with scoring potential, while Finnie fits as a potential 3rd-line LW energy/ defensive smart forward. The 2nd round pick adds further future value.
There are definitely risks involved in moving a star like Nylander, but that’s the cost of acquiring young talent and extending your competitive window.
Toronto also signs Simon Edvinsson to a 7-year deal worth $8M AAV.
Trade Rielly to Canucks or other team and return draft pick maby first round pick.
He would immediately slot into the top-pairing on defense and become a core piece of the blue line going forward.
Give Easton Cowan a major role next season, potentially even a look in the top line. He already looks like an NHL player and still has room to grow.
Depth adjustment.
Benoit + 2nd-round pick could be moved for a more mobile, puck-moving defenseman like Dante Fabbro. ------

It’s a high-risk, high-reward retool. Toronto gives up a proven star, but gains a mix of elite upside, center depth, and future assets. If Kasper hits and Brandsegg-Nygard develops, this could reshape the team’s core for years.

Change Finnie to Sebastian Cossa and there’s a starting point there.

I wouldn't do the deal just because of the lack of track record of some of the players and Nylander is worth more than what is in this package, but if a deal was put together I wouldn't replace Finnie with Cossa. Finnie is going to be a good one.
He had a nice Rookie year with 30 points and even if he turns into a consistant 50 point guy that is a better piece to add than Cossa. Cossa for all the hype and yes he has been great in the AHL, has still only played one NHL game.
