To Leafs: Tanev (50% retained by Chicago) , Zadorov (50% retained by Chicago) 25' 1st (From Calgary)

To Calgary: Brodie, Liljegren, 24 7th (All From Toronto)

To Black Hawks: 24' 5th, 25' 5th (Both from Toronto)

*All teams involved are cap compliment with current optimal rosters*

I'm a Leafs fan, so this trade may naturally slightly benefits the leafs, but there's a framework to a good trade here.

I think you have to take out the 1st, improve the 7th you're sending them and give Chicago something better to retain 2 contracts, which I think is unlikely.

2.) 01 Sep 2023 10:13:38
Hard to believe Calgary would give that up for anD with only one season left on his contract and Lily. 7th round pick is meaningless. Hawks aren’t doing the leafs favours. Taking on millions of salary for
Two picks that far.

3.) 01 Sep 2023 19:55:28
Does CHI still have two retention slots left? Not sure.

4.) 01 Sep 2023 21:22:11
I believe they still have 1 left. I also kinda forgot about the McCabe contract.

5.) 01 Sep 2023 22:34:27
@LL I think each team can have upto 3 retentions.
They are using the one for McCabe, so you're right, 2 left.
Doesn't make any sense for Chicago to use up all their retention slots, especially with the TDL coming. I'm sure some teams will be in on Perry, Foligno & Hall for which they'll need to use some retention.
BTW no way Chicago retains 2 contracts for a whole season for two 5th rounders, teams normally get a 4th rounder for retaining for one month after the TDL.

6.) 02 Sep 2023 00:56:31
So outside of all the convoluted, late round picks for retention, what your saying is:

To Leafs: Tanev, Zadorov, 1st round pick.

To Flames: Brodie, Liljegren

If the 1st round pick was going the other way, to Calgary from Toronto, then Conroy might consider it.
Otherwise, why in gods name would Flames do something as foolish as this?

7.) 02 Sep 2023 02:05:58
@Tags I wasn't sure if they were retaining anyone else (and didn't check), but that's what I was thinking as well.

8.) 02 Sep 2023 03:57:07
Agree with WB49.

26 Jul 2023 04:39:10
TOR: C Tanev, Zadorov (both 50% retained by Chicago)

Calgary: Brodie, Liljegren, 2025 1st, 2025 4th (both pick from Calgary)

Chicago: Matt Murray 2024 5th, 2025 5th, 2024 7th (all picks from Toronto)

Cap "problem" fixed

thekidsarealright

1.) 26 Jul 2023 10:40:37
So you expect Chicago to eat Murray’s contract, half of Tanev contract, and half of Zadorov contract for two 5th round picks and a 7th? Why on earth would they do that? Ya, awesome deal …. for Toronto.

18 May 2022 04:34:29
Chicago: Patrick Kane (3M retained)

Toronto: William Nylander, Nick Abruzzese, 2023 1st round pick

This is the equivalent of the Kawhi trade in hockey terms.

thekidsarealright

1.) 18 May 2022 04:59:26
It's a nice idea and I'm not familiar with basketball enough to know if their roster translates into hockey. The cap space is an immediate problem and there are other options for Nylander that don't hinge on just having one good year.

2.) 18 May 2022 07:20:05
@Henlo NBA is soft cap+luxury tax. If the NHL was run that way then Dubas could spend 120/ year if he wanted too.

The difference between a basketball trade and a hockey trade - as we have discussed ad nauseum since last season- is the difference Kawhi makes vs Kane.

In his prime, 99 would never have had even close to the same impact as Michael Jordan. Different sports.

Personally, I think this is an overpay. If Nylander is moved then I think you look for cap space and a middle 6 player with picks and prospect coming back.

3.) 18 May 2022 09:48:55
Kane based on skillset, leadership and 3 cup rings this would be a Kawhi type move. Kane is still a superstar, 92 pts in 78 games this past season. He knows how to close out a game or a series, doing so as a star player.

4.) 18 May 2022 10:51:05
I really wish people stop trying to trade for kane. How about Nylander for debrindcat.

Two final moves to sure up roster.

1. Sign Michael Stone to 1 year 1 mil deal, he's a good defender/penalty killer who's had a couple tough seasons with Calgary the last 2 years which leads me to believe 1. He'll take a cheap contract and 2. He would okay with being a 7th defender, not to mention he already has chemistry with Brodie and would most likely be his d partner on the penalty kill when he's in the roster.

2. Trade Engvall, Liljegren (2.1m combined) and maybe a B level prospect to Columbus for max Domi at 50% retained (2.65m). Considering the facts that Columbus exposed him in the expansion draft and he only has 1 year left on his deal I believe Columbus would make this deal. Not only is he the son of a leafs legend but also an offensively gifted/ gritty player that has chemistry with Marner from their London days that also fits the bill of a player who would like to redeem himself which Dubas clearly values.

Domi-Mathews-Marner
Bunting*-Tavares-Nylander
Kerfoot-Kampf-Mikheyev
Robertson*-Spezza-Simmonds
Extra- Brooks, Gabriel

(*If Bunting fails to provide top 6 production he switches places with Robertson)

Rielly-Brodie
Muzzin-Holl
Sandin-Dermott
Extra-Stone

Campbell (1A)
Mrazek (1B)

PP1
Nylander-Tavares-Mathews
Rielly-Marner

PP2
Simmonds-Spezza-Domi
Sandin- Bunting/Robertson

PK1
Kerfoot-Marner
Muzzin-Holl

PK2
Kampf-Mikheyev
Brodie-Stone or Dermott-Brodie

Lastly sign Rielly 7-8 years at 7-8m before we lose him for nothing next offseason

I don't feel like doing the math but if this roster isn't cap compliant as is it would be with an addition of LTIR space and or placing Brooks and or Gabriel on waivers

1.) 30 Jul 2021 07:32:20
Whenever someone wants Max Domi they immediately lose me.

Domi left MTL because he's a brutal centre but doesn't actually understand that.

He's also a goof. He's really not the guy you want/ need.

2.) 30 Jul 2021 12:03:25
Max Domi is certainly not the answer.

3.) 30 Jul 2021 13:05:17
Yea, no desire for Max.

4.) 31 Jul 2021 23:13:26
Domi already on the third team that doesn’t want him. His dad being a “leaf legend” is irrelevant. Hard pass.

The Wild are pressed right up against the cap and wouldn’t be able to take on that much salary without dumping some back on the leafs.

Arizona might do the trade. They drafted Somi 1st round and Demers 2nd round. Domi especially is a let down. They can look at it as a second chance to draft a better player.

I doubt you can dump Leivo and Martin for Jenner.

The Anaheim trade isn’t even close to reality. Manson is worth much more.

The Marlie stuff is a nice touch.

Obvious Leaf fan.

I'd still love the leafs to trade for a solid top pairing right handed defenseman before October 4th (first game of the year) but chances are that won't happen. So with that being said the following in my opinion is the best roster they can ice with the players they currently have.

Marleau(A) Mathews(C) Nylander
JVR Bozak(A) Marner
Hyman Kadri Brown
Komarov Aaltonen Kapanen
HS: Martin, Moore

Riley Hainsey
Gardiner Zaitsev
Polak Carrick
HS: Marincin

Anderson
McElhinney
IM: Sparks

This is a perfect 21/21 lineup. I understand that they have publicly stated they will not name a captain this year but we all know that just means they're waiting to give the C to Mathews next year but why wait? He's clearly a leader and arguably one of the best hockey players in the world! It would also be pretty cool for him to be the youngest captain in NHL history! Also I think you have to give Marleau an A simply because of his massive amount of NHL experience. You leave Bozak with his A because he's the longest standing leaf and I also don't think Riley or Komarov will mind giving up there letters to Mathews and Marleau. In Riley's case, he knows he'll be getting it back soon enough anyways.
I think playing Marleau with Mathews and Nylander is a no brainer. The second line is also a no brainer and the third line with Hyman and Kadri is scary but also a major offence threat (over 50 goals between them all last season) Then in the case of the fourth line I think Komarov is obvious But keep an eye on Aaltonen, guy was a stud in the KHL (second best league in the world) last year and Babcock clearly likes him! I also believe Kapanen is way to good to leave off the roster so it just makes sense! Intimidating factor with Komarov but again another scoring threat with Kapanens speed. All in all they'd have 4 very good lines and if Kapanen struggles or they're playing a tough team you put Martin in and if Aaltonen struggles or they need face off help you put Moore in.
The first 2 defence pairings are obvious but i keep Polak (if he's healthy, if not I like Rosen) due to his rough play and NHL experience and this way the big 5 defence prospects (Rosen, Borgman, Liljegren, dermott and Nielsen) can develop and light it up in the minors as they're all on 2 way contracts. I personally don't like Marincin at all but we can't send him to the minors so let him sit in the press box!
Also in my opinion the goalie situation is extremely obvious.
So you send everyone not on that Roster to Minors other then Leivo, Rychel and Fehr as the all have 1 way contracts and would be lost to waivers and are all good players that just won't make the lineup so I'm not sure what type of trade they make but they'll need to make one involving those 3 players and also don't forget they have 2 3rd round picks and 2 7th round picks in the Dahlin draft.
This is just my opinion, does anyone have any thoughts?

1.) 30 Sep 2017 22:12:34
For an experiment, I would swap Marner and Brown.

Brown might benefit from playing with two vets who have played together for a number of years.

Marner would benefit from playing with Hyman who digs out the puck much better than Bozak or JVR and Kadri has some finishing skills. It's better that he's playing on a line all season if you plan on moving JVR, Leo and Bozak.

That makes an interesting top six for the playoffs and gives some callups a chance at proving themselves; not to mention dumps a lot of cap.

The Leafs need to get something for JVR, Bozak, and Leo. Can't just let them walk for nothing.

22 Aug 2017 04:05:13
They could also sign Will Butcher and possibly add carick to previous deal or move him for picks/prospects or keep him for depth at RHD and possibly move Marincin and play butcher on the left side on the third pairing with hainsey on the right side as he has experience there
