As a armchair GM, i don't mind this trade for $ amount. However, I believe there is real value in trading Gardiner before the deadline. Although leaf fans have a love-hate with him, he has value on the market and could be used as tool to gain a need for leafs. They have too many left handed D and essentially muzzin can fill that hole now, maybe not as much offensively but much better defensively. My plan would be to trade gardiner for a solid right handed defenseman (McQuaid) (UFA next year) and a pick from Rangers (2nd rounder? ) . Now for Nylander. His contract dispute and holding out while under contract cannot sit well with leafs management. The bottom line is that he got way too much on his contract and the bad taste in management's mouth (dont care what GM said) is not going to go away and I think they will move him because of contract and lack of production. Nylander can still get you a boat load on a trade with his potential, but he can and has already been replaced by a faster, grittier, more defensively responsible right winger in Kapinen. Kappy is the keeper here and he will come much cheaper. I would trade Nylander for a good gritty, tough hitting forward who will protect the smaller forwards. The other option is to trade Nylander for a skilled top three/ four defenceman and a pick to come back. There are other options out there including western conference.

Gardiner to NYR for McQuaid and 2nd rd pick

Nylander to Carolina for Pesce (or Manson in ANA) and 2nd rd pick

OR

Gardiner to Carolina for Ferland and 2nd rounder
Nylander to Carolina for Pesche (or manson) and 2nd rounder.
