Leafs have too many defensemen clogging up the minors. Big or small, I smell some moves coming.

LHD: Borgman, Rosen, Nielsen, Marincin, Lindgren

RHD: Liljgren, Holl, Subban, Ozhiganov, Loverde, Gudbranson

Plus Sandin(L), Durzi(R), Kral(L) & Hollowell(R) who were all drafted this year.

I believe Leaf management has finally concluded that Gardiner is a wonderful figure skate who can't, or doesn't want to, play hockey, and that he should be traded for anything, hopefully as much as a bag of pucks!

2.) 06 Jul 2018 17:32:19
We have a lot of depth defense, but only Liljegren and maybe Sandin have any real potential. We should be dumping some of these guys for extra picks and maybe a center man or two. Our depth on wing and goal is still deep, so unless we trade a winger or two, we don’t really need anyone right now.

I think that a defenseman that the Leafs should be targeting is David Savard from CBJ. Big bodied rhd who has a decent contract and is signed for another 3 years.

To CBJ: Kapanen, 2018 1st
To TML: Savard

Is this too much for him?

Tradecenter

1.) 12 May 2018 15:45:35
Id offer up 2 seconds probably.

2.) 12 May 2018 17:28:12
Doubt Columbus will move him like you said he is on a good contract for the next 3 years. He would be a solid add to the leafs though.

3.) 13 May 2018 02:16:35
I would absolutely make this trade if Columbus would. I don’t think it’s too much.

Hacksaw is right though. I don’t think Columbus is going to move him unless the offer is overwhelming.

To Van: Brown, Borgman, Gauthier
To Tor: Tanev

I think Tanev is being slightly overvalued because he is a right shot. Although he consistently misses close to 20 games a year

This part might be a little crazy but could work.
Sign Tavares for 1yr at 20 million
Then extend him for 6 years at 8.3 it's the same as signing for 7x70 just makes the cap hit cheaper after the first year.

The whole blown knee thing is very concerning, and caused Tanev to miss a large number of games this season. When healthy, he is a solid top 4 defenseman. But you are correct, Tanev is very prone to injury.

My gut instinct tells me we should avoid Tanev altogether. At $4.5M, he seems to be reasonably priced. But when you are only getting half a season out of him, all of a sudden he’s becomes very expensive.

The package you are offering here seems more than reasonable. Brown is the only player that would be coming off the current roster. Borgman and Gauthier will probably never make the team full time. Signing the Swedish guy at center position tells me Leafs have zero interest in making Gauthier our 4C.

I would do this trade. It’s a low risk, high reward potential trade. With the exception of Brown, who is a good depth player, but certainly not irreplaceable, we aren’t losing anything. If Tanev can stay healthy, then we acquire a potential top line RHD.

2.) 05 May 2018 21:58:12
All these suggested contracts that pay players an enormous amount of money first year, with reduced salary the remainder upon extension are almost certainly illegal, and just plain silly. It’s an extremely expensive risk to take paying a player that much money for one year of service.

If GM’s felt that a contract as this one suggested here, and the others posted below, were a good idea, they would already have been taking advantage of this loophole (if it’s even legal) . As there hasn’t been even one player signed to a deal like this, you need to acknowledge that not only is this type of sign and extension not only a bad idea, it also isn’t allowed by the league. It’s almost certainly cap avoidance.

3.) 05 May 2018 22:39:29
I like it but the max amount of money you can sign a player to per year is 15 million.

4.) 05 May 2018 23:24:41
You can't pay a guy more than 20% of the total cap in a given year. The maximum he could earn is 16 million.

To Arz: Carrick, 7th 2018
To Tor: Schenn

Tradecenter

1.) 17 Jan 2018 17:53:27
Seriously? No thanks! Why would a team looking to improve and solidify a playoff spot down the stretch, trade for a guy who is a healthy scratch on the worst team in the league? Give your head a shake!

2.) 17 Jan 2018 18:28:23
Didn't know healthy scratches played 44 out of 46 games.

3.) 17 Jan 2018 19:53:02
Schenn was terrible for us in the past and has shown no signs of getting better. Would much rather take the potential in Carrick.

I think the Leafs should be looking at trading one or two of either Mcelhinney, Sparks or Pickard.

Teams like the Coyotes, Bruins, Sabres, Oilers, Stars, Rangers, Islanders, Capitals, Blues and Flames could all be looking for backups in the summer.

Leafs could probably get a 3rd or 4th maybe even a 2nd if a team is desperate enough

Tradecenter

1.) 12 May 2018 02:42:14
Leafs have to do something as all three are not exempt next year. Whoever doesn't win the back-up job will have to be waived and probably lost. My preference would be to keep Sparks (AHL goalie of the year) and trade McIhinney and Picard for picks or in a package for an upgrade on D.

2.) 13 May 2018 14:24:03
Pickard cleared waivers last year, maybe he would again. I'd support moving McElhinney as part of a package, his stock is fairly high and will only go up if he keeps playing well for Team Canada.

01 May 2018 20:59:16
What defenceman could a package like this get in return?

From Leafs: Brown, Nielsen/Rosen & 2018 2nd

To Leafs:?

Tradecenter

1.) 02 May 2018 16:46:53
I would not move Brown or the pick unless you get a Dougie Hamilton, Jacob Trouba type of return.

2.) 02 May 2018 18:54:06
All those players are tradeable. For the right price, I would move them all. You won’t get much for that package though. Certainly not anything better than we already have.

If you want to acquire a top line defender such as Hamilton, or his like, it will cost a lot more than a depth forward, an AHL lifer, and a 2nd.

Would Panarin be cheaper to get than someone like Parayko? If that was the case maybe the Leafs would flip him for a top pairing Rhd.

Everyone needs to stop trading Horton. He is a key part of this core. But seriously, trading him makes zero sense.

I don't think that the first trade is necessary. And take out Bennett and replace the 2nd with Carrick, would be more reasonable.
