I think Qwerty is jus trying to drive some conversation in a pretty slow rumour time. no Leaf fan would ever trade Marner for real. Training camp will determine who the bottom pair is with Carrick, there's one spot and it has to be Marincin, Dermott or Rosen. Rosen has been generating some interest so I got to give the edge to him.
Dermott and Liljegren could be an outstanding pair in AHL and move up together next season, idiealy and then trade Gardiner.

Tor: Bjugstad, Demers (retain 500k), 4th if jvr re signs
Fla: JVR, Kapenen, Fehr, Marincin, tor worst 2nd
Why: FLA needs a top winger to round out there top 6, fla already tried to trade demers and they save some cap in the deal, also kapenen gets to play in the nhl regularly since tor has nylander, marner, brown, hyman, marleau, komarov on the wing
Pitts: Bozak, Carrick, 3rd if maatta plays 50 games
Tor: Maatta, 5th if bozak re signs or pens make it to conference finals
Pitts is looking for a third line center and shoots right which is a plus, ufa after this year so no big financial commitment, tor now has great options on d and Bjugstad re place bozak and marleau replaces JVR
Tor will probably have a cap problem when Matthews is a RFA but it will be a lot easier to trade a dmen then a forward, gardiner and hanisey ufa in two years as well cap wise they can probably only keep 4 out of these 5 dmen in two years ( Reilly, demers, gardiner, Zaitsev, Maatta)

Why on earth would you trade kapanen. the kid is clutch. He produced on a 4th line without much skill. Could you imagine say marner setting him up he's going to be a 30+ perennial goal scorer i believe. We don't need maatta if you are going after demers, lingdren or how ever you spell it should make the jimp in a couple years we have so much on the farm that makes this unrealistic to give away so much. We should take a wait and see on D approach, there's a bunch of new faces to test before we start adding more.

Pitts: Bozak, JVR
Fla: Kessel, Pouliot, Marchenko, Fehr, 2nd(pitts), 2nd(tor)
Tor: Bjugstad, Demers
Why:
Pitts gets a third line centre and also right handed, JVR replaces kessel, both UFAs next year so pens not locked in long term, saw a report saying pens think they'll have 2.2 m in cap space after signing dumoulin and sheary, there cap only goes up 1.65 m so that's under 2.2m
Fla: Gets top line winger to play with Huberdeau and barkov, also they already tried to trade demers to give Pysyk and Petrovic, also get draft picks for taking on cap dumps which they have the room for so if in playoff race have picks to move at deadline if not they have more picks in the draft
Tor: needs a dmen and get a younger centre and they don't give up nylander or marner, both guys locked in for 4 years at decent cap hits, JVR would want more than what there making, and toronto frees up cap space

Bjugstad is a fine, huge, 3rd line center, but is slow, and on this team that will not work well with Marner requiring a fast sniper for a center.
Demers is a vet who has never delivered the offence, never delivered on the physical end, rarely fights. Oh crap! He's Gardiner without the offence.
Wonderful gift you gave the Penguins.
Toronto gives up 4 players and a 2nd.
Pittsburgh gives up Kessel, Pouliot and 2nd.
Florida gives up just Bjugstad and Demers?
Imbalanced and worthless trade for the Leafs. Leafs are better off getting a collection of picks for all those players, not taking back any salary and showing some patience.
Brooks will be better than Bjugstad and I'd rather have Franson for two/ even 3 years than 29 yr old Demers for 4 at 4.5M; halfway through which his value will have diminished and he will be replaced by Liljegren and/ or Rasanen.
I'm quite happy with Hainsey moving to the right while we wait, and Carrick on 3rd pair. The Leafs have that covered well.
Florida is dumping salary, mandated by the Panthers owners. In no way shape or form will they take Kessel's salary (or him for that matter) when there are a smorgasbord of cheaper and younger, productive RW's around the league to trade for.
Zero need for the Leafs to hand out our trade-able players, for marginal players.
Not even close.

If Alexander Nylander is still available at 7th overall, Arizona will have to over pay but still reasonable trade
Tor: OEL, Domi, 7th
Ari: Matthews, Lupul, Percy, Leivo, Corrado, pitts 1st
If you think its unfair for Toronto, you can add a contingence that if Arizona makes the playoffs leafs get a 2nd, or if Matthews win Rookie of the year, lupul scores 20 etc.
If you think its unfair to Arizona, they get a 2nd if OEL signs a new deal or if Alex Nylander wins rookie of the year etc.
Or wait till july first to make this trade just in case stamkos doesn't sign with Toronto but Arizona would have to draft nylander.

First off I hope the Leafs do NOT trade the 1st overall pick. That said, if they do they should only do it for a HUGE overpayment.
