I would like to see Leafs acquire Drew Doughty from LA for Jake Gardiner, Trevor Moore and Jeremy Bracco,
LA is too old for Doughty to extend. He and Gardiner are roughly the same age and each has this year and next before UFA.

Professor, you need to go back to school! Gardiner couldn't tie Dougty's skate laces and Moore and Bracco are long shots to make the NHL. If you want Doughty, include Marner or Nylander to a couple of 1st round picks plus a top prospect like Liljegren or Kapanen. Otherwise, wait til he becomes a RFA and offer him a boat load of money.

It would be "insane" for Leafs to trade any of Nylander, Marner or Kapanen; especially now that they have three high quality centres. Those three wingers bring the most crucial elements of speed, youth and creativity. Messrs Brown, Hyman and Johnsson bring youthful energy and effort.
Indeed Leafs top priority and need now is to upgrade their defence corps. Rielly, Zaitsev, & Dermott are keepers. They are mobile, young and talented.
They have assets ("people") that will have to be moved to be able to acquire a mobile, "potential" top pair defenceman. They include Gardiner, Martin, Carrick, Leivo, Sparks, and Bracco as well as a 2019 draft choice.
Allowing for historical increases to the cap, my eight year cash flow projections support that there is no need on the horizon to have to move any of the young players. I'm weary from all the amateurs fretting about having to trade Nylander. That would only serve to diminish team speed.
Leafs are unlikely to obtain a franchise defenceman for those assets however there are "mobile physical young" defencemen out there that would be an upgrade over Gardiner. It remains to be seen if any of Borgman, Ozhiganov, Rosen, Liljegren, Rasanen, Sandin or Nielson might develop into quality NHL defencemen. From games I've watched I anticipate two will play in the NHL.
The acquisition of Tavares to centre with Matthews & Kadri is fabulous and makes upgrading gbthe defence (especially Gardiner) essential and urgent.

Gardiner is match in age and contract term - although his value is about 50 - 60% of the value of Doughty.
That means Leafs need to add the equivalent of JVR (and (presumably because of impending UFA status, Bracco as inducement) .
There is no merit for TML to add a 1st.
1 Canadian for 3 Americans!
Kapanen should be with Leafs as soon as a pending UFA is moved.
