If Skinner and Faulk are the better players, then Carolina doesn’t make the trade. If Nylander and Gardiner are the better players, then Toronto doesn’t make the trade. See where I’m coming from? It’s an exchange of players of a similar nature, and doesn’t really address either teams needs. Carolina is going to be moving defenders, but probably not forwards, and they won’t be taking a defenseman back, even one of Gardiner’s caliber.
Myers is a big kid that plays a good game, but I don’t see the point in giving up Hainsey to obtain him. Jets don’t really have a need for Hainsey either. As Myers is also a pending UFA, I wouldn’t want to be giving up a first round pick for him either.
All these players are good, and fairly even in value. Which is the problem. you are exchanging a bunch of players of all same position and caliber. It doesn’t really address much of either teams weaknesses. In the end, all teams are still in a position at the end of the day as if no trades had been made at all.

Stamkos has a great; booming one - time shot and Gardiner as much as he isn't a defensive defenceman, makes others look pretty good, as he makes more brilliant plays than foolish ones. I would rather keep Gardiner than Stamkos, cheaper too.

You’re probably giving too much up for Tanev as well. He is injury prone and has only played half a season the last two years. I would probably pass on Tanev all together unless we could get him for rock bottom price.

Thornton is too slow and coming off injury at his age, will not be racking up the points like he used to. He’s good at poking the puck over the blue line and letting the real talent scoop it up and pop it in the net. But that’s about all he’s good for. I expect he will be looking for $6M or so, which I feel is a little much to be paying a third line center. Again, the biggest knock against him is he is so slow. Doesn’t fit Leafs style of play at all.
If we could get Tanev for that price, then I would say go for it. It looks like we aren’t giving up enough. But then again, Tanev has never played a full 82 game schedule, and has been seriously hampered by injury, limiting him to only about half season the last two years straight.
Tkachuk for Nylander is an interesting proposal. I would like to have Tkachuk and his grittiness, along with a goal scoring capability that surpasses Nylander. Again though, injury (concussion) ended his season early, and I would maybe think twice about making this trade.

No to Joe. At his age and coming off injury, too big of a risk. Would rather chase Stastny for the same money. Younger and faster. Having a great play offs and showing he meshes well with the young guns. 16 goals and 37 ass. during the regular season and lots of playoff experience to bring to the Leafs dressing room.

The flip side of this trade where we are giving them Gardiner for Rackell isn’t even close, even with the pick and prospect thrown in.
If Nylander is worth Manson, then Rakell is worth a lot more than Gardiner and a low level pick and prospect.

Once again Jake Gardiner is of no value. What I find interesting is how all Leaf players are undervalued and other team's players overvalued. Of course the 2 or 3 times you see Manson play vs. the 82+ times you see Gardiner plays, leads to a belief that Manson is less mistake prone than Gardiner. Anaheim looked so good in the playoffs compared to the Leafs, right. I would keep Gardiner any day, but play him in the right situation. Nylander I would trade, but not for Manson. If Anderson could of stopped a beach ball in game 7, Gardiner would not be thrown under the bus by fair weather Leaf fans. Less we forget the great Morgan Reilly was -4 the 1st game. Reilly I would trade before Gardiner. He is scared and also a major turnover machine.

Agree with some of what you said, i actually think highly of reilly but the rest. Nylander we would have to hands down win the trade. Maybe nylander and our first for dahlin and buffalo 2nd. Probably wouldn't happen but yeah. that'd be my proposal to let buffalo have both nylanders.

I watched a lot of Anaheims playoff games last year, and Manson was unbelievable for them. He's definitely their best defender in my eyes, I think a high end forward for Manson is a good trade for the Leafs. Granted I haven't watched him much since, but it sounds like he's improved vs. last year.
Nylander + Carrick for Manson would be a trade Anaheim would have to consider, imo.

Really? Are you having flashbacks to 2014 when the entire team was handing the puck over.
Gardiner ended up +24 last year, and he started out poorly.
He's currently +1 and getting better after a slow start again.
But I do agree he should be traded as part of a deal to bring in an RHD similar to Manson, Trouba etc.
The money will be too high for the Leafs cap management with what they will have to pay out, so, don't fret, he will get traded.

No that's not what you said. They are both meaningless statements, because what you said doesn't reflect the reality of NHL contracting; rather just your unsupported feelings.
As for Gardiner's value:
17th in scoring last year. 1 pt behind Doughty.
More than Weber, Jones, McDonagh, Suter, OEL, Fowler, Seabrook, Ellis, Barrie, Faulk, Dumba, Trouba, Parayko, and so many more.
A better +/ - than all of those listed, and far better than most of them.
All done on a team that carried 5-6 rookies all year, fresh out of last place.
I seriously doubt any team will even table Gardiner a low starting offer of 4M, let alone tell him that's all he's worth, or they don't want him.
He will get a very nice contract with the Leafs or with someone else.
There are many reasons the Leafs may want to trade Gardiner, but your feelings aren't one of them.

In general, turnover machines don't get a +24 (last year) .
Turnovers are the result of missed assignments as well, and are often not the fault of one player, but rather, forwards that don't back check and make themselves available for a pass, and defence partners that get taken out of the play, or fail to cover their responsiblities. The defenceman quite often needs an outlet conveyed to him, as he is often facing the boards.
Good skaters like Gardiner often skate the puck out of trouble whereas Polak might try to pass it in bad circumstances. Skating it out is more difficult to do, and often leads to problems, but the end result is always better when you have control of the puck outside your blueline, rather than handing it over to the opposition by just chipping it out.
It's called "puck possession", a trademark of the better teams.
Karlsson (71 pts +10) is worse than Gardiner in terms of +/ - and makes more blunders, but makes up for them by scoring more with nearly double the points. He also has great skating skills which leads to better possession numbers.
Still, Karlsson wasn't +24.
Yes, +/ - figures have to taken in context as they are often affected by miscues of other teammates on the ice, but they still tend to guage how a player is doing defensively vs. his offence. Especially larger values.
What Pogipangit said was incorrect, and the reason Gardiner will get traded is because of the availability of younger, cheaper LHD's and the cap hell the Leafs are going to face in 2 years.
I understand exactly what you said. I'm just saying you are wrong about Gardiner. There are many other players just like him that are sought after for their offence, because it's rare for Dmen to have great offense.
He will have plenty of takers in a year and a half, if he isn't traded by Lou.
