I guess it all depends on how you feel the difference in value between Johnny G and Nylander is. Most analysts seem to rank Geaudreau higher and I tend to agree with that. But the fact Nylander is signed much longer and that 40% of his contract has already been paid out, Nylander has value added. It’s probably a lot closer than first glance. I’d actually almost rather keep Nylander just because of the long term implications of this trade. But if my job was on the line and felt a major shakeup of some sort was needed, or that this trade wins ya the cup, then this trade gets done.
Excellent prop because it really makes you think. What do I want more: a cup now? Or a chance at multiple cups for several years?

I like Johnny G a lot and would be very happy to see him as a leaf. His contract isn't long enough for me to give up Willy though. If you think it's a cup winning team good deal otherwise it sets us back in the long term.

Leafs and Blues won’t be trading partners this year as both have cup aspirations, so will be looking to add through picks/ prospects without losing roster players.

I would love petro on the team but right now makes no sense from either teams point of view. Stl. will add, not subtract, for another run and look like they will pull it off again, Tor. will rid themselves of UFA D if possible and lean on their so-called stars to make a run. Not sure what the vision on the GM is or how long it will take to implement - if it works at all - but this team is way too soft and I don't know about anyone else but no analytics can replace the eye test - they look like little cats (can't say what I want to say)

I have no issue with the one for one talking point trades at all. I enjoy them myself as everyone has a different perspective on them.
I would never, ever do this one though. Could be just me but if I am not mistaken he makes 10/ year until he is 34 with a NMC. That's not a deal I would be willing to make anytime. Mathews isn't my favorite player in the world but he is worth more than this.

We don’t have room for any more free agent signings right now until we start waiving players. I can see a few guys getting dropped soon as Hyman and Dermott comes back. Is Smith-Pelly any better than those plugs though? If he was, Leafs would have just signed him instead. I’m not sold on Smith-Pelly as a player Leafs need. Even if we can get him at league minimum, he doesn’t add anything of value to the team that we already have. It’s not like he’s going to make us any more favorited to win the cup or anything. He would be one of those guys that get cycled every two to three games, which if you ask me, makes little sense. Why pay two or three guys league minimum to play bottom line if they all only play 1/ 3 to 1/ 2 the season? Makes more sense to give the job full time to someone like Kassian, who makes a little more, but can play every game.
