To TOR:
Jack Campbell
2021 4th Round Pick

To LAK:
Garret Sparks
2021 3rd Round Pick

LAK has Petersen in the minors who I think they'd prefer to play in the NHL this year and so, Campbell would be on his way out to make space and Sparks would go to them and run their AHL team.

Campbell would come to TOR and help take a good amount of pressure off Andersen.

Since both goalies are on just 1-year deals but Campbell is the better goalie, TOR sends a 3rd and LAK sends a 4th; any decent draft picks are of use to LAK in their current form.

No need for another goalie coming back we already have
Hutch
Woll
Scott.

Dubas once trade for campbell then regretted making the deal

Would he dare try it again. you u never know.

Leafs biggest need right now is a capable backup goalie. Not very glamorous posting a proposal like this, but a very smart and timely one.

Sparks can’t do the job. Is fact that he is just not an nhl caliber goalie. And as a result, Andersen is getting overworked in regular season and burning out in playoffs. Lack of a good quality backup goalie has been a leading factor in Leafs early exit two years in a row.

I don’t know if campbell is the man for us. I’d like to see Hutchinson get another try first. Is Lehner still available? He got stabbed in back by islanders. Maybe we can sign the vezina finalist to a cheap short term deal of some sort and run a tandem with Andersen. That appears to be the way of the future now with so many teams doing it. And it seems to be working well for those teams running tandems. Having Lehner share net with Andersen could finally see us get past first round playoffs.

Take out the 1st round pick from Leafs to Wild, give them a 3rd round pick.

2.) 19 May 2019 23:09:25
Staal and Spurgeon are both old players that Toronto doesn’t need.

3.) 20 May 2019 03:01:37
I would rather have Staal than Kadri any day. Staal is cheaper, better, bigger, and a winner who would never do stupid bonehead moves that gets him suspended from playoffs.

Spurgeon is on the last year of his contract. Yes, he’s a very good player and is RHD. But we don’t need another small, skilled offensive defenseman. We need a big stay-at-home lumberjack to man the point and strike fear into the hearts of the opposition. Someone who is on a long term deal. Spurgeon we can do without.

If we are giving up long term assets like Kapanen and the 1st, we should be taking back players with equal amounts of term. Staal has two years, and Spurgeon has one. Realistically neither would be re-signed by Leafs. So we would be losing a lot of time value here.

I hunk Minnesota will continue to make changes. They are a very good team to be suggesting proposals for right now. The fire sale isn’t over yet. Lots of good players may still be available at rock bottom prices. Maybe Leafs can take advantage?

To TOR:
Micheal Ferland
Dougie Hamilton

TO CAR:
Kasperi Kapanen
Andreas Johnsson
Nikita Zaitsev
Jesper Lindgren
2019 1st Round Pick

TOR finally gets that gritty forward they need as well as a big, young, right-handed defenseman who is a BIG upgrade over Zaitsev and can really complement Rielly. As a result, Hainsey can play less minutes and be a larger contributor.

CAR gets two great young forwards who can chip in with offense (something they desperately need), a roster replacement for Hamiltion in Zaitsev (this is more for the Leafs' cap situation than anything), a first round pick, and a 21 year old defense prospect in Lindgren.

I don't think the Leafs should give up a Liljegren or Sandin in this deal as Ferland is a pending UFA and so, risk in mind, I'd rather have those 2 over Lindgren, who seems to be very offensively-minded as it is.

Also in terms of the Leafs' right wing depth after Kapanen's departure, I believe Moore or Bracco can come in and play the 4RW position or higher if offense is needed.

I think your over paying no need to send both of kapanen and Johnson.

2.) 17 Jan 2019 03:00:12
Three roster players, all locked up long term, seems like a lot to be giving up for a year and half of Hamilton. Ferland with two concussions this year and pending UFA might not have a lot of appeal for Leafs.

So I posted a Leafs-Canes trade for Pesce a few days ago but I thought up a more revised version of the potential deal.

To TOR:
Brett Pesce

To CAR:
Jake Gardiner
Kasperi Kapanen
Garrett Sparks
2019 1st Round Pick

TOR gets a big, young, right-handed, defense-oriented D-man who's on a reasonable deal for many years.

CAR really shores up their offense (an area of weakness for them) with Gardiner (50+ point D-man), they add a young, high-skill forward in Kapanen, they get a top goaltending prospect in Sparks (another area in which they aren't necessarily strong) and a 1st round pick to boot.

A bit to much, gardiner has neRly = value.

2.) 07 Aug 2018 21:04:13
Waaayyyy too much for Pesce, and they won’t want Gardiner they already have 2 top 4 LD.

3.) 08 Aug 2018 00:38:43
Kapanen and sparks would be more than enough.

4.) 08 Aug 2018 02:44:49
It seems like a heavy payment, but maybe too much, but it also looks worth it. I think both teams would take the trade.

Supposedly, the team that gets the best player is always the winner, so I'd say the Leafs still win this trade even if they overpay.

I like it.

To TOR:
Brett Pesce
2017 2nd Round Pick

To CAR:
James Van Riemsdyk
Roman Polak

With this trade, Toronto gets that big, right-handed d-man who fits in with their young player core as well as a 2nd round pick to bolster their prospect pool some more. Carolina is currently a middle of the pack team in terms of offense and so, adding in a player like JVR can be really helpful to them. This also allows Toronto to give another one of their forward prospects a chance to develop in the NHL and get accustomed early on.

Also, Carolina has a plethora of defensemen and so, trading one to help the offense is not a bad idea. Roman Polak basically serves as a filler in the deal and can either play a top 6 role or be an injury replacement player for them.

1.) 21 Jan 2017 22:39:39
JVR could get you Pesce and a 2nd

2.) 21 Jan 2017 23:32:53
I think this trade is perfect. People are overpricing JVR. Even though he's a stud, he's a winger and not a centerman. We'd be getting a young RHD which are expensive right now. We could also use Carolinas second along with our first and the 3 second rounders we already have to move our spot up in the draft.

3.) 22 Jan 2017 00:39:21
TBH Polak can get a 2nd by himself. Is JVR straight up for Pesce an even trade? I think JVR gets the Leafs a first rounder and a good prospect. Won't get a Larrson in return (the only comparable trade be have to go by) but Larsson is much better than Pesce IMO.

4.) 22 Jan 2017 04:33:18
First, we don't have 3 2nd round picks. Ducks own the middle pick of T. O. Sens and Sharks from the Anderson trade.
JVR's value is different for different teams. He is more valuable to a contender (Ducks, Wild, Hawks, etc) then to a rebuilding team (Canes, Yotes, Sabres) . Especially contenders with an aging core and a need to go for it now attitude. That is where the best value for the Leafs is.
Leafs still have some holes to fill (D, centre, LW) that is best addressed through the draft. Check out my blog in "Leafs Talk" to check current rankings of the top D prospects. Adding even a middle to late 1st has a good shot at landing one and trading up a 1st could get you Valimaki or Makar. In 2 years: Draft picks in ()
Hyman - Mathews - Marner
Leipsic - Kadri - Nylander
(Big LW) - (Big C) - Bracco
Martin - Gauthier - Kapenen
Soshnikov - Brown
Rielly - Zaitsev
Gardener - (RD) (Valimaki)
Neilson - (RD) (Foote) or Carrick

5.) 22 Jan 2017 08:12:15
Canes are not good trading partner with leafs that's bottom line.

6.) 22 Jan 2017 09:28:55
I like this trade but, turn the pick into a 1st. Polak and the second cancel out. If Hall gets you Larsson than I think JVR is worth more than just Pesce so. 2nd to a first. I just have to point out that Pesce is +10 on a team that's collectively -6, that says a lot.

Realistically, I don't think the Leafs will (nor should they) make any trades at the draft or in the offseason unless they are getting good value for their veteran players. With Babcock as the coach, I firstly think that he is going to take a season to evaluate the roster and see who he likes and who follows his systems and ways properly and who doesn't. Also, for players like Kessel, if he can perform well under Babcock and get to at least his standard 35 goals 80 points type of season, his value can be replenished from last season and even if we don't make the playoffs next season, he can be traded for a lot more. I'm not saying that we shouldn't trade them but as Shanny keeps emphasizing, we really should be patient with all of our decisions.

What do you think about this?
