Offseason

Leafs

Nazem Kadri
Connor Brown
Dmytro Timashov

Colorado

Tyson Barrie
Tyson Jost

Exponentially increases the Tysons on the Leafs and gives a fresh start to Jost, whom I think can slot in on as the Third Line centre, alternating with Nylander. Barrie signs July 1st.

Leafs

Zaitsev
2020 2nd Round Pick
20221 3rd Round Pick

Red Wings
Zetterberg Contract
Madison Bowey

Pay Zetterberg into his retirement on LTIR and get a depth D with toughness. Wings take Zaitsev for a 2nd round pick.

Free Agent Signings
Marner 6 Years 9.3 Mill
Johnsson Bridge 2.8 Mill 3 Years
Kapanen Bridge 3.0 Mill 3 Years
Ennis Two Years 975,000
Brandon Pirri Two Years 975,000
Anders Nillson 1 Year 1.25 Mill

Lineups
Hyman - Tavares - Marner
Johnsson - Matthews - Nylander
Marleau - Jost - Nylander
Pirri - Ennis - Moore

Rielly - Barrie
Muzzin - Dermott
Rosen - Bowey

Extras: Gauthier, Petan, Holl

If your trading kadri it’s got to be a better return then Barrie I think Ennis isn’t a leaf next year I think that’s why they got Petan pirri would be an ok pickup and I think for kappy and Johnsson I think you can get them cheaper this is there first full year so I think that benefits the leafs.

Trade Deadline

Leafs:
Gardiner (extension signed)
2019 3rd Round
2020 3rd Round

Minnesota:
Spurgeon

Gardiner could be a viable option for Minny and solidify their left side while putting up points (also a Minnesota native where I think he would love to sign). Spurgeon facilitates the top RD position for the playoffs and next season.

Offseason;

Leafs:
Liljegren
Connor Brown

Anaheim:
Montour

Trade Zaitsev before July 1st.

Leafs 2019-2020 Defense

Rielly-Spurgeon
Muzzin-Montour
Rosen-Dermott

Why does Minnesota get Gardiner signed to an extension, but Leafs take Spurgeon with only one year left? If Gardiner is extended, he becomes more valuable, and the picks wouldn’t have to be included. He is a top 50 defenseman after all. Despite the hate he receives from Leafs fans, he is actually a very valuable commodity that many teams would love to acquire. Minnesota, however, might not be one of those teams. Lol. Minnesota has one of the best defense in the league. Being as they already have Suter and Brodin, I don’t really see a fit for Gardiner. But you never know.

Liljegren+ for Montour is a trade I could see happening. I would be all for this trade if Anaheim dares make it. Montour is virtually everything we hope Liljegren develops into. A smooth skating, puck handling offensive defenseman that can lead the rush or make an outlet pass, he would be an ideal 1RHD for Leafs given his age and contract. He’s been rated in top 50 defensemen himself, though has fallen a little this year with Anaheim’s poor showing. I don’t know if Brown is enough value to close the gap between Montour and Liljegren. But the core idea is good and a little tweaking is all that is needed here imo.

Looking at those lineups you posted, it’s pretty clear the defense is vastly improved. The addition of two high quality RHD easily makes this team much better. I think you nailed it here Gilmour. I just wish we could see something like this actually happen.

Assuming the Hurricanes are serious about selling Ferland and RD and they are losing contention in the race for the playoffs, how about this;

Leafs;

Johnsson
Brown
Woll
2019 2nd Round
2020 1st Round (If Ferland Signs for 5ish years, 2020 3rd if he does not)

Canes;
Hamilton
Ferland

Brown and Johnsson aren't being utilized to their full potential and would immediately help the Canes Top 6/9. It would sting to see Johnsson go, especially with how he's playing but I would rather have Kapanen and then Ferland fills the void and adds some grit, especially in the playoffs.

Then trade Zaitsev for a pick (Islanders maybe?).

Lineup for Playoffs;

Hyman - Tavares - Marner
Ferland - Matthews - Kapanen
Marleau - Kadri - Nylander
Lindholm - Gauthier - Moore

Muzzin - Rielly
Gardiner - Hamilton
Dermott - Hainsey

I like this trade only thing I would change is take out the first and add Bracco.

2.) 11 Feb 2019 18:43:44
The leafs aren’t trading Bracco or the 1st, Ferland won’t re-sign, the leafs don’t have room for him.

Zaitsev would also have to be trade so the leafs would be able to afford Hamilton.

With Ellis and Subban signed for at least 4 years, the Preds' Top 4D is set for a while. Josi is UFA in 2 years and they're LD prospect pool is light. Do you think Fabbro could be available in a year or two due to their Top-4 RD being solidified, potentially hurting his development?

Preds:
Dante Fabbro

Leafs:
Sandin
Brown
2020 3rd Round Pick

Fabbro can turn Pro whenever but I'm sure he is waiting until the most beneficial situation arises (ie an immediate Top 4 role). I think Fabbro has the making of a stud and is NHL-Ready in my opinion.

Of note is his rights could potentially expire August 15, 2020 if he finishes his degree and doesn't go pro before that. Would you rather be more patient and wait to nab him for free? Could be another Vesey situation for Poile.

Leafs potential Top 4 D in 2-3 years:

Rielly - Fabbro
Dermott - Liljegren

The logjam on Nashville's would only come into effect after Fabbro's ELC expires, so it would more than anything depend on Fabbro's thought process I would think. The Preds would have to be nuts to turn down that package for him, but at the same time I'd see it as an overpayment, unless of course Jedi Master Dubas really wanted him. I trust everything that man does at this point.

2.) 15 Aug 2018 22:45:30
I like it. And if Preds would even consider it, Leafs should pull the trigger on a deal like this. We have Reilly and Dermott for years to cover our LHD, which means Sandin would only ever be at best 3LHD, so if Leafs can move him now in order to shore up RHD, it is worth pursuing. That makes Zaitsev expendable in a couple years.

3.) 15 Aug 2018 23:39:03
Says the guy who posts trades involving half the leafs team to other teams for players that were just signed a year ago to a long term deal. And if Gardiner and 2 prospects can fetch Panarin in your posts, to say this proposal is not even close would be ridiculous, as Panarin, 1yr of control or not would be worth more than just puljujarvi (who hasn’t quite bloomed as expected yet) and Bouchard (who is a strong prospect) (most leaf 33)

Gilmour93- if they would be willing to make a trade for Faulk, who Carolina says they aren’t trading. Why would they not consider Gardiner. As he is the only one of the 2 to have a 50 point season under their belt, and when he is on the ice, the leafs are actually noticeably better. Granted when he makes a mistake it’s noticed, but that is due to his offensive style play. Over their careers they have almost identical point totals but Gardiner did it in one less season, and for some years, a much worse team.

Too much for Fabbro. He has not played in the NHL. He does not have much more value than Sandin at this point.

Let's try a change of scenery post that I think would greatly improve the Leafs defence.

First trade:

Leafs:
Gardiner

Jets:
Myers

A fair trade for the Leafs needing a solid defensive RD and the Jets getting an offensively-minded LD to pair with Trouba or Buff. Balances out the Jets Left side D and gives Trouba some of his ice time back without having Kulikov in the Top-4. Both contracts also expire at the end of the year, so extremely low-risk for both teams if both are unexpected to re-sign with their respective teams.

2nd Trade:

Canes:
Faulk

Leafs:
Brown
Sparks/Pickard
2019 2nd Round Pick
2020 3rd Round Pick

Canes are in an on-the-fly retool and could use another goaltender in case Mrazek or Darling don't come to fruition (unlikely to do so) and acts as a buffer before Nedjlekovic is ready for starts. Brown provides some depth scoring that can play throughout the lineup.

With Hamilton pickup, Faulk is their 3rd Pairing D man, bringing down his value.

Essentially we swap Gardiner for a more defensively-responsible RD-Man and gain a "Right-Handed Gardiner" back that has excellent non-goal related metrics and would also be a low-risk option, being under a reasonable contract for two years.

Obviously, the Faulk trade is contingent upon Gardiner being traded. No need for two Offensively minded D-men when we need stability.

D Lineup 2018-2019

Rielly - Myers
Dermott - Faulk
Hainsey - Zaitsev

1.) 14 Aug 2018 19:39:07
For Winnipeg's part, I doubt they move Myers for Gardiner as it doesn't really help the Jets. They'd rather just hold onto Myers and play him at LD if need be until the Trouba situation plays out.

Leafs:
Leivo
3rd Round Pick

Panthers:
Petrovic

Two guys that have seemingly fallen out of favour with their respective coaches and I think would benefit from the change of scenery. Helps the leafs with a tough RD that is still relatively young and could vie for a shutdown role. Could be done if Ozhiganov is over-hyped?

I always loved Wilde and wish we had that 2nd round pick given in the Plekanec deal to snag him in the draft. I guess there are issues with his character which made him fall. I would love to see him in a Leafs jers. Need more pissed off players in the system!

I think the value may be too low to get him as his ceiling may be high. Maybe remove the second rounder from NYI and add a higher pick from Toronto?

Oilers are definitely high on Bouchard. Can't see them letting him go for a pending UFA and a depth forward. Let alone giving up Pulj and a 2nd rounder. I could see the Oilers going hard after Faulk with Pulj as the return. Without Sekera and the above trade, oilers D would be feasible;

Nurse - Faulk
Klefbom - Taylor Hall Downgrade
Russell - Benning

Not awful and Sekera goes to LTIR for cap relief.
