Leafs trade Carl Grundstrom
Oilers trade Matthew Benning

An idea that's been floated around by Mackin a few times this season. With the additions of Manning and Petrovic, Chiarelli is clearly convinced he has a playoff team. Missing three defensemen (Sekera, Klefbom and Russell) is difficult to overcome, so Chiarelli acquired some stopgaps until those guys cone back. Benning was already playing 3rd pairing minutes and likely won't lose them now, but once Russell and Klefbom start to get healthy Benning's going to be the odd man out. I could see Chiarelli agreeing to something like this to avoid waiving Benning and losing him like Zykov.

Grundstrom is a near-NHL-ready prospect, though his ceiling looks like a bottom six grinding forward. Current bottom pair D for a likely future bottom six LW, seems fair to me.

Benning doesn't have much value, Oiler fans themselves don’t really think of him highly. It def wouldn’t cost Grundy, whos playing well in the A, but I like the idea of Benning. i'd give up a 3rd.
