After signing Nylander, the Leafs o need to trade away Horton

To ARI: F - N. Horton + 2019 3rd round pick
To TOR: F - D. Bolland

Bolland's deal runs out after this season, Horton's next season

Cap hits
Bolland $5.5M
Horton $5.3M x 2 years

Total cash to be paid

Bolland $5.5M
Horton $8.1M

This helps to solve the cash crunch for next season with Marleau's deal still on the books

If Toronto can do this to get rid of Horton’s contract I’m ok with it.

Hortons contract is a 12 month LTIR and makes no difference as LL explained two years ago.

Ive actually suggested this before on this site. I really do believe that the leafs need to move this guy at some point before next season and it is very possible. Now the leafs can actually exceed the cap before the start of the season and then place him on LTIR to get the full cap savings.

It's my understanding that you need to be under the cap with all contracts to start the season, you can then place a player on LTIR to get relief.

Torontobuds- you are allowed to exceed the cap by 10% (8 million atm) until the roster submission deadline. I'm not exactly sure how the LTIR works at the start of the season but that's why they pay those GM's well. Highly likely we see Horton's contract moved. The price should be similar to what Montreal did with the Jets for Steve Mason and Joel Armia last year. Essentially gave up a 4th rounder for a player worth a second round pick. We can probably call it a third rounder as Horton at 3.6 mil makes less than Mason would have.

Teams that will have the cap space: ARZ, CAR, NJD, even MTL if they can't land a big free agent.
