Tor:
Horton's contract, Marincin, 2019 3rd rounder

Mtl:
Alzner 50% retained (2.3 mil AAV)

Boosts our defensive depth. He will do well under Babcock and this is like getting him at a very low cost.
If Hainsey goes down we don't have very many defense-first minded options and Marincin is not an NHL player.

Also dumps horton a year and a half early.

How long is Alzners contract for? Montreal pays 2.3 per year plus 5 for Horton which includes next year and gain crappy dman just so they can get a 3rd round pick.

Do you see any flaws in this deal?

Alzner at 2.3 would be ok at best but having him around as insurance also could be ok.

Overall it's an iffy deal for both sides.

Montreal took a 4th round pick and joel armia to absorb steve masons final year of his contract (4M- buyout cost was about 2.75 mil) .

Horton is owed 3.6 mil in salary next season. Alzners contract is for another 3 seasons after this one.

Might make sense for MTL. they'll save 8M (2.3x3.5Years) and be absorbing 6.25M (4.5x0.5 year 3.6x1year for hortons salary and 0.8x0.5 year for marincin) . So they actually save 1.75M and get a 3rd rounder. Depends how badly they want to move Alzner at this point.

We don’t want Alzner even at $2.3. Lol. That would still make him third highest paid defenseman on the team next year. And he would be bottom pairing for sure. He’s got four years left on his deal @ $3.6M per, so 50 % retained is actually only $1.8M, so we just saved half a million, but if we don’t take him at all, we save even more.

I don’t think Leafs would be interested in Alzner even if Montreal retained 100%. He’s just not very good.
