Leafs trade Nylander, Durzi, 3rd
LA trades Martinez, Lewis, Thompson, Kupari, 1st

Similar to the O’Reilly trade. We get our top 4 RHD, a couple guys that are basically cap dumps, but are capable of playing on 3/ 4 lines, a highly rated prospect player, and the 1st, which could very well end up being the first overall.

LA continues to get faster, and in this case, also younger. Nylander is proven. He’s here and now. They don’t have to wait for development. He makes an immediate and significant contribution. Durzi and the pick can are thrown in as a couple bones for LA to chew on. They round the trade out and make LA feel good about themselves for getting three players back in return for the five sent our way.

Marleau/ Mathews/ Kapanen
Hyman/ Tavares/ Marner
Lindholm/ Kadri/ Lewis
Thompson/ Gauthier/ Brown
*Leivo, Johnsson

Rielly/ Martinez
Gardiner/ Zaitsev
Dermott/ Hainsey
*Ozhiganov
(Sandin/ Liljegren)
(Rasanen)

I don't think they get a first out of LA. With an aging team with big contracts and a chance at 1st overall.

Kupari would be a good get but the other players are of no use to the Leafs.

Maybe a Muzzin/ Taffoli/ Kupari would do it?

2019/ 2020

In my mind, the top six are fixed:

Marleau/ Matthews/ Kapanen
Hyman/ Tavares/ Marner

The 3/ 4 lines look pretty solid, but there
are areas of concern

(Lindholm) / Kadri/ Brown
(Leivo) / (Gauthier) / Ennis)
*Nylander

Defense needs 1RHD to replace Hainsey. Hopefully that will be Liljegren. Would solve a lot of problems for us.

Re-sign Hainsey cheap. He’s good backup for Liljegren. He now holds 3LHD until Sandin is ready. If Liljegren gets shaky, we can move Hainsey up to 1RHD a few games.

Reilly/ (Liljegren)
Dermott/ Zaitsev
(Hainsey) / Ozhiganov
(Sandin/ Rasanen)

Most trade scenarios are going to be focusing on depth players. There’s just more of them to talk about, and those are the positions that are usually the biggest question marks because of turnover. That’s why I like trades involving depth guys. You can talk about a few of the neglected players is all.

I like it, that unprotected first is what gets me.

This is a pretty solid deal if that unprotected 1st remains in deal. You can put any combination together from LA and unless Doughty or Kopitar are part of the deal then nothing really seems good. Very very underwhelming. No matter what D
Muzzin or Martinez you put in, it just doesn't seem all that appealing for a guy like Nylander. Then once you add a forward none of the kings forwards really seem inticing as that's why they suck to begin with. You can add any of their prospects and again the leafs are giving up Nylander here.

Basically any deal with LA gives you an ok Dman, forwards who are basically cap dumps and a prospect from a team who lack high level prospects.

I think LA has to throw in that 1st or this deal just isn't sexy enough for leafs to accept. With or without a Toffoli in deal the Kings need to add that 1st. Are kings this desperate enough to add a guy who can be looked at as a 1st overall pick from 2014.Nylander improves the kings now and for a long time. tough call for kings.

The whole trade was based around getting that pick. Lol.

I like it. The Leafs take salary for players that are actually not that bad. They can also trade them before the deadline for picks. Martinez will help with the development of the Leafs D and bring some needed stability. The Leafs can then move Gardiner and employ Hainsey in his place. A complete win.

The Kings can't afford to do their rebuild at this point. Just look at their top players in their 30's. They made the playoff's last year so this drop is just a lapse. Plus they upgrade their youth and speed short term.

They get to move parts for Nylander, and a decent prospect.

Of course the Leafs get futures. Kupari looks intriguing and has decent size, but he's only 18 and fortunately we can stuff him on the Marlies for a couple of years. Worth the risk.

I seriously doubt the Kings will tank. They will pick it up after Xmas like they did last year and make the playoffs again. So that pick won't be anywhere near the 1 OA. But you can dream and you never know; injuries happen.
