Hopefully leafs win cup this season. Then Marleau wants to retire. Then a team needing to reach cap floor simply trades for his final year. Yes leafs need to give up a 1st round pick for this to happen. I'd say do it. He retires gets his money and has cup in his back pocket. Team needing to reach cap floor and wanting to rebuild anyways gains 1st pick..then due to his very minuscule salary actually owed due to front loaded contract this team ageees to this deal..

Marleau is the obvious choice to shed salary. The problem is:

He is currently on pace for 16 goals and 48 points. Very respectable numbers. He continues to impress at the highest levels of the game. In phenomenal shape for a player his age, of any age really, he looks like he could play well into his 40’s. If anyone will break Jagr’s iron man streak, it will be Marleau.

That’s why, win or lose, I feel it’s unlikely Marleau retires after this year. He plays for the love of the game, and can still play better than most anyone who has ever strapped on a pair of skates. I’m pretty sure when they are in their 40’s playing alumni games and showing off their ripped abs to their now fat and bald ex-teammates, Jagr and Marleau will still be skating circles around their peers. They truly love the game and took impeccable care of themselves their entire lives.

So, basically we are stuck with Marleau until his contract expires. Because win or lose (especially win), he ain’t retiring, and plans on being on the heaviest favored team to win the cup again next year.

My concern is Marner leading team in points and Matthews hurt again. Would Marner's camp not be thinking that they need close to Matthews money. I do.

If Shanahan's message of needing to make sacrifices in order to win cup is serious, we are going to have more of a problem next Summer. Especially with Kapanen proving he is a top 6 guy.

Something has to give. N

I think we could get a Pesce/ Fluery/ Ferla nd package from Carolina and they would cost roughly what Nylander would next year.

This would add 3 solid young players to the team. I really would like Ferlund, we need this type of player imo
