Leafs trade Nylander, Johnsson, Bracco
St. Louis trades Steen, Thomas, 1st

Hyman/ Tavares/ Marner
Marleau/ Kadri/ Kapanen
Lindholm/ Thomas/ Steen
(Leivo) / Gauthier/ Brown

Old man Steen is a cap dump. We wouldn’t be under obligation to honour his NTC, so can trade him again after or in off season. Thomas is the real target. Highly rated, but still only a prospect player that may not work out, hence the inclusion of the 1st as insurance.

Johnsson and Bracco are throw ins from our side to help give St. Louis a little more incentive to make the trade. They would likely make St. Louis team as top 6-9 forward in the same role as they are projected to be playing on Leafs.

Matthews is hurt obviously. Once he comes back, Kadri and Thomas get shifted down, and Leivo gets pushed out.

It will be real interesting to see how Lindholm fares in the 3C role for the next few games until big A comes back. If he nails it like I kinda think he will, I could see a lot more of Kadri on the wing happening. The top lines would really benefit from his presence on LW considering the lack of playmaking LWs on the team.

Our LW is definitely weak compared to the RW, and the exodus of Marleau either this summer, or guaranteed next summer, leaves us in desperate need for someone who can fill that gap. If Lindholm can play 3C for us, and Kadri successfully make the transition to LW, then we can trade Nylander for 1RHD, and we will have successfully plugged all the major holes on the team.

We just need to stock our pipeline with some better quality prospect players for the center position and ensure the future continues to be as good as the present.

Didn’t St. Louis already trade their first to Buffalo?

2x1st + throw-in. Sounds familiar. Didn’t I suggest that first?

I really love this deal. The only problems are St. Louis doesn't have a 1st round pick and due to Nylanders contract demands st. louis won't have cap space to afford him. If Nylander takes the 5.75 Steen is worth than it would work but we all know greedy thinks he is worth 8-9 million so good luck. st. louis could offer a 2920 1st rounder if they think Nylander is worth it.

Steen plus Thomas sure would be a solid return.

@craigger

I knew cap issue was going to be a problem, which is why I took Steen. St. Louis has Bouwmeester too we could take if need be. His career is finished after this year and we can afford him for the remainder of the year. After that he’s UFA and wouldn’t be coming back. Just it would cramp us on cash for a rental if we decided to pursue one.

@mostleaf

Yes, St. Louis traded their 1st to Buffalo. But like Craigger suggested, we can take their 2020 1st is good too. Or maybe another prospect player (Kostin or Kyrou maybe)?

@smelly

Everyone knows the precedents. It’s not like you stumbled on some secret formula.

Here’s five other suggested trades that came before your proposal from three different contributors. There have been lots more. These were just the first five I found in like two minutes of looking.

20 Oct - LeafsGM - Pysyk, Tippett, 1st for Nylander
20 Oct - Yak64 - Johansson, McLeod, 1st for Nylander
18 Oct - LeafsGM - Barkov, Pysyk, 1st for Nylander, Kadri
16 Oct - MarsBars - Joseph and 2x1st for Nylander
11 Oct - MarsBars - Kunin, Pateryn, 1st, 3rd for Nylander

I would hardly consider Severson a throw in. He’s an established RHD on a good contract. He is a valuable player and highly prized asset on NJ defense. They won’t just be “throwing him in”. I also suggested Leafs add two extra players of their own. Not trying to rob three players from Blues here. I’m giving them a little something extra back to go along with Nylander. Although reconsidering, I should have suggested Leivo instead of Johnsson.
