After fully understanding the RFA comp, no team will offer sheet Nylander. If he were to sign a $7M for 6 year (total is $42M)
You then divide by 5 and the AAV is $8.4M, thus requiring the team to surrender 2 1st's, 2nd and a 3rd. If a team is willing to do that, I would take the package.

However, re-posting this trade, slight change added

To NYI: F - W. Nylander + D - N. Zaitsev

To TOR: D - R. Pulock + F - C. Cizikas + F - M. Dal Colle + 2020 2nd round pick

The Isles get a young F to add to the mix with Barzal and company as well as a RHD signed LT

The Leafs get a RHD, who can play top 4 and signed for 2 years (still RFA) they take on Cizikas contract to help offset the salary and gain a prospect and a 2nd round pick

Dal Colle needs a change of scenery, drafted in 2014 and yet to crack the NHL.

your deal has a lot of potential. the only problem I see with it is that the islanders much like the leafs don't want to spend 7-8 million over 6-8 years for a star but not a superstar. They are going to have to pay Barzal upwards of 8-10 million. Then there is the possibility they and by they I mean Lou will want to offer sheet Matthews this summer for 13-14 million making Nylander not an important target.

Nylander will be targeted by teams that need offence and can't financially afford a player like Matthews or already have a star. Teams like Carolina, Florida, Edmonton. Just to name a few.

Your deal outside my comments is fair value for Nylander and his situation.

Like basis of your trade.

Thing is you give up on D for another. Leafs to add to existing core if not add two more D. MDC very good junior player bust so far. Don't think I'm interested in reclamation project. CC nice addition to fourth line. Sandpaper.

Don't think Lou offer sheets Matthews. Reported yesterday two sides have begun talking. I think it happens before July 1. I will take Matthews for his word he wants to stay here. Publicly stated he told Tavares he wants to stay here. Can't see him going to hinterland of Long Island. Just needs to ask Tavares. I can see Lou interested in Nylander to add to his young talent.

Very valid point Rocket9.hopefully your comments are true about Matthews. I personally don't know him so his word is as good as these rumours.

If July comes and Matthews hasn't signed there will be a lineup of offer sheets. I hope he signs same % of cap as McDavid did and in January when extensions can be signed it gets done.

If Marner Matthews and Taveras =33 than everything will be all right.

Just to clarify AM and JT in combined sit down interview with Friedman addressed when JT asked AM if he was here for long run and AM stated 100% before JT signed. Does he keep his word we'll see.

I think your numbers work 33M.

AM 12.5
JT 11.0
MM 9.5

Or thereabouts on breakdown.

Agreed.

Also, anyone can say they r doing something but until it officially happens that's when words get honoured.

Going to be one hell of a season regardless. I'm enjoying it.

That's a bit high for Marner. That's Kucherov money, Marner is more like $8M max. Really hope Matthews comes in at $11.5M.

And zero chance Matthews gets to July 1st.

Del Cole is a bust.
No thanks!
If it isn't Wahlstrom Leafs don't want it.
Pulock isn't a 2nd pairing defenseman with good offensive skills and poor defensive skills.
Leafs already have one of those.
Leafs don't want any more of Islander's 4th line players.
We were lucky they took Martin back.
I don't see how this deal makes the Leafs a better team when they are giving up by far the best player in the deal.
