The problem with trading Nylander for 1RHD is that you need to find a replacement for him, which would be impossible given our other assets. So, you have to accept a downgrade. In this case, I think Meier is a good choice. He’s young, big, talented, and a natural goal scorer. Not given the same opportunity in SJ as Nylander has been given in Toronto, you have to think he is ready for a breakout season, and with Matthews and Marleau as his linemates, he should perform admirably.

You can flip 2D and 3D if you prefer. I’d just rather put the two UFA’s on 3D and give our future the opportunity to take over now.

Leafs are not trading BigWilly for Kadri. Pesce is a good Dman but we are not getting him.

Our defense and 4th line is better. Staal instead of Ladri is a bit of a wash. Staal is much better defensively, though slightly lower offensive production last two years than Kadri. Meier is the only downgrade we take at 1LW. He has enormous upside though and should come close to matching Nylander’s numbers this year in a bigger role.

Kadri and Nylander are the best players in both of those deals. That's why it makes the Leafs worse.
