An extension for Ellis would have to be in place.

I like the fact that we would be dumping contracts on Nashvillle. Not sure what their cap situation is or how many contracts they are carrying right now, but if Nashville would make this trade, it might be a good idea. Leafs can do worse than to pursue Ellis.

Leafs should have the cap space to re-sin Ellis if Gardiner and Hainsey are let go. We are also unloading a fair amount of salary in this trade by moving Kapanen.

Still, you make a good point and it’s one I’ve made myself several times. Leafs look as though they are going to scrimp on salary on the back end. Bringing in a high priced veteran is not our solution. Ellis will be looking for at least as much as Gardiner, and maybe more. We would be better off keeping Gardiner if we are going to pay that much to any UFA.

Leafs have roughly $22m to devote to blue line beyond this year. Predictions say Ellis might be getting $7m. If that's true and u bring him in to play with Reilly, u have $12m left. Assume Zaitsev can have a better year and is worth his contract and u play him with Dermott, the money left for third pair and seventh d would be around $5m. Could work if Lilligren jumps in with say a Carrick.

Way to much for Ellis. why trade Kapenen. trade Nylander. Kap is a two way player, Nylander sleeps after entering our zone. AND. trading away a 1st is a no-no.
