Toronto trades Kapanen, 3rd
Detroit trades Rasmussen

Toronto trades Gardiner
Dallas trades Tufte, 1st
*Gardiner signs to extension first

Just trying to get a feel for what these guys are worth. Both are solid but unproven prospects with a lot of size and skill. Won’t be making NHL for at least another year, but are expected to be making contribution soon.

Thoughts?

If you don’t think these trades are acceptable, give me your opinion what you think would be fair.

I say we trade for a right d first then go from there.

Mostleaf

There’s nothing wrong with trading for a 1RHD, and I’ve suggested a lot of proposals for someone to fill that position. that's not what this proposal is about though. Recycling the same proposals or variations thereof is narrow minded and loses appeal quickly. Leafs need to keep their options open and explore all possibilities. I realize I’ve suggested trades for nothing these players before, but I’m still looking for consensus on what would be generally acceptable for prospects like these guys, so I can work them, or similar players, into a larger movement later, with the whole and bigger picture in mind.

I don’t like the idea of trading gardiner while pursuing the cup, unless you can get a better defensemen. I would take the first trade because bracco could take his spot eventually.

The Detroit deal is bias of what you want. speed for size with both having lots of potential. Maybe change 3rd for an actual lower level prospect . say Andrew Nielson and this deal could happen and work for both teams.

Dallas deal I like the prospect but tradin Gardiner for no D coming back might hurt
I suggest
Spezza, Johns and Tufte for Gardiner and Gauthier

Dallas gets rid of Spezza deal and Leafs only have it for 1 year. Johns is RHD the leafs are looking for and Gardiner is LHD Dallas wants. Tufte for Gauthier is the reward Leafs gets for taking Spezza contract

Love the PP
Nylander Tavares Matthews
Dermott Marner

Marleau Kadri Brown
Reilly Spezza.

Trading Gardiner without having someone come in would definitely weaken our defence next season, and Leafs have already proven they will hold onto UFA’s for playoffs rather than weakening the team. I expect Gardiner will finish his term as a Leaf.

@Craigger

I was aiming for size here, yes. I’m biased toward size over speed, even though I think it’s pretty obvious Leafs brass are the opposite, preferring speedy skilled players. I like your suggested improvement to the Dallas trade. Spezza would be a good 4C for one year, and we can still afford him.

Thanks for the comments and definitely gives me something to thinking about.

Go Leafs.
