Usually I do a follow up to justify a proposed trade but as I sit here with my coffee this morning, I'm feeling a little lazy so here is the trade, straight up!

To Canes: Gardner, Kapanen, Sparks, Bracco and a 3rd

To Leafs: Skinner, Pesce, DeHaan and a 2nd

I don’t think that’s enough, if leafs can pull it off then do it but I don’t think that’s enough, plus I kind of want to keep Kapanen.

I don’t see Carolina making this trade

Valuation:

Skinner > Gardiner
Pesce > Kapanen
De Haan > Sparks + 3rd
2nd > Bracco

Skinner is a top line winger. Gardiner is not a top line defender. Contracts are about equal. Gardiner plays 2LHD behind Slavin for a year to allow Fleury and Bean develop. Skinner plays top line beside Matthews, and Hyman drops to 3rd. Carolina signed DeHaan four years though. I’m assuming they think Fleury and/ or Bean need longer than one year. They might not want to chance only a single year of Gardiner.

Pesce is a proven 1st/ 2nd line defender and RHD. Kapanen is 3rd line winger with 2nd line potential who hasn’t even played a full season of NHL yet. Pesce plays 1st line until Liljegren is ready, then drops to second, at which point Zaitsev can be traded. Kapanen probably makes 2nd line after Williams is shown the door.

Sparks is a backup goalie who might be a starter one day. Even if he is a starter, Goalies don’t go for much. Leafs only traded a couple picks for Andersen. Sparks + 3rd isn’t worth De Haan.

Bracco is currently in AHL with virtually no chance of making the team any time soon. You can get a useable NHL player for a 3rd/ 4th round pick. (Eg. Soshnikov, Oleksiak) .

Contract wise, I think the $ and terms are pretty close. Valuation is about close, but slightly factors Leafs. Needs analysis is close, but also factors the Leafs.

It’s close, but seems to favor leafs slightly in a couple measures.

Leafs lineups are much better though:

Hyman/ Kadri/ Brown
Ennis/ Lindholm/ Jooris

Rielly/ Pesce

So mostleaf33 the pattern of fumbling over your own comments continues. you say it’s not enough to make the trade and then say you want to keep kapanen. But then offer no alternative. that’s worth a double🤡🤡.

Your right. Maybe a little light coming from the Leafs. How about Leafs send their 1st in the deal and Carolina sends a 2nd back.
